Whenever I post pictures of a recent coin purchase, there will always be one person (different each time) who will tell me that the coin has been "harshly cleaned" and that I should send it back for an immediate refund. If nobody else on the thread makes a similar comment, I tend to disregard it...

Interesting and viable idea, Joe, but by comparison to whom am I a Morgan expert? Yes, I tend to answer Morgan questions and I'm no rookie, but I'm only an "expert" here because other people say I am. I could start answering LMC questions but that won't make me an LMC expert. At least, not in the time I have left on Earth.

SsuperDdave, Great posts. OddCoins, Not sure who's the rude poster you're referring too. That's what the moderators are there for. And you can report any post that you feel is crossing the line. Unless you're referring to me , I have only seen one attack on a poster and I was the one attacked. It was removed within a couple of minutes. Great forum, great people.

Quote: Receive any advice gratefully. Weigh the factors. And make your decision. But let it be your decision I agree wholeheartedlty with this. I am not sure if this will come out the right way but here goes: It is your purchase. It is your action. It is your choice. Take the time to educate yourself in addition to the opinions you solicit so you can make the best choice for you. At the end of the day, if your choice is different than the majority of the opinions, own it; if your choice is the same as the majority, own it. If you make a great deal; own it. If you make a bad deal, own it. Grading standards change, market trends change, so make sure your decision is right for you and that the coin fulfills the goal as you have outlined.

Actually I didn't completely take the advice and changed my opinions on slabbed coins. I try to stay with the top 3 3rd party graders but I will buy a coin from even the lowest rated if I need it for one of my albums. I have done so before and will again if need be.

Just kidding - that's one of those smart responses talked about...
However, possibly more true than you said. Or is it? SuperDdave sort of said it all. But like some others, I'll still throw in my 2 CENTS. Ever see that advertisement on TV where a guy is standing by a car in an accident, talking to a girl and he is saying how he can find all the insurance info on the internet. And she says she didn't know that was on the internet. She then makes a statement that you can't put things on the internet that are not true. And the guy says where did you hear that? She replies, on the internet. To sum up what I'm pointing at is just because something is on the internet, does not make it true. This forum is on the internet. Many people jump in just to be saying something, right or wrong, just to be saying something. Usually though on this forum, possibly 90% of the members do try to help, try to be honest, try to be sincere. Of course you still have to be carefull of anything on the internet.

There are a couple folks who believe they are never wrong and therefore are labeled as the god's gift to knowledge and power. My philosophy is that everybody is continuously learning, regardless of your knowledge level. Taking advice and critiquing with a grain of salt will only make you a better numismatist.

The only person who never did any thing wrong is someone who did nothing. Even at that point it possible to say that he did something wrong.
I agree with the list of people that was previously posted, but I think that cc9999999 could also be added to that list. His articles are always interesting and each contain something that I can take away from it. The only problem is is I can remember it that is. I've always found that the ability to find pertinent information is of the utmost importance.
I still believe the information you learn yourself is of the most use. After all you are putting your money on the line, and that is on powerful vote in my book.
Pick and choose who you are willing to listen to, but in the end it your money on the line so some personal knowledge is truly mandatory.

The key to successful datamining on the Internet - here at CCF as well as anywhere else - is developing the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Firstly let me repeat my gratefulness that so many took the time to offer thoughts. Dare I say, some wisdom is being expressed. My subject line I now believe was misleading. It's a wonder I haven't been blasted by someone! I'd like to give an for example as to what I had in mind. I suppose this really applied to newer members like myself. A few years and posts ago I inquired about the use of acetone to clean ( now I konw I meant to say conserve ) coins. I was warned to be careful with the stuff. I think just carl warned of possibly burning my house down, lol. There was a consensus here that it likely would not work. I went ahead anyway. House in tact, lol. I tried it on a cent with black spots. I wanted the results to work regardless the advice. After soaking overnight, no luck. So as you all have been saying, I learned all the same. About the results and the advice in this forum. It was this type of experience I thought would be interesting to hear from others. Interestingly as well, there is now a thread about good results from using acetone on a Mercury dime. Go figure! David

Quote: When I reply to a post I am giving my opinion and only my opinion from seeing 1.3 million cents. Wow! May I direct any inquiries regarding cents your direction? Wow. Your opinion has to be valued, I would think.
