Collecting for fun is not a waste.
Remember these actually will likely lose value since they are not backed by anything substantial like silver. When I was 22, a candy bar was .30. The exact coins I used to buy a candy bar back then are in circulation and would buy less than 1/3 of the same (but smaller in size now!) candy bar.
Two dimes in 1964 would likely buy you more than a gallon of gas. The value of those same two silver dimes will still buy at least a gallon if not a little more.
If you collect the silver proof versions - likely can't roll hunt for them though :( - you will have something that will at least hold its value if not increase in value.
Since no one can see the future, no one can accurately predict if the idea of having a full set of these will ever hold enough novelty to make them worth anything over face value. Again, though, the set of silver ones will be valuable no matter what.
Just enjoy your hobby in any way that makes you happy.

Haha we should! I just got home and searched 8 rolls of quarters I got tiday from the bank. Found 2 yosemite, a chaco, mount hood, northern mariana, samoa, and guam. Also found a MS 1965 quarter which I've never seen I dont think. Good times.

First of all, I just want to say I think the ATB Quarter series is far more appealing than the State Quarter series. mindsets - I can totally feel your caution about the ATB Quarters, because I felt the same way. Since the S quarters are only available through the Mint, I decided to leave the P's & D's alone and focus only on the San Francisco quarters. So now I buy a roll and a 100-coin bag of each ATB Quarter. If I really like the coin, I'll buy additional rolls and the big 5oz silver coin. Though I did go with the 3-roll White Mountain set this time, I'll stay with the S rolls for the rest of 2013.

I am just adding the s series to my p&d set. I hope someone quickly makes an album for these additional coins. Quote: I decided to leave the P's & D's alone and focus only on the San Francisco quarters. I could never " just " collect those. It would always irritate me that I could never collect .the entire ATB series in s minted business strikes. You would have the entire series but always be missing 2010 and 2011

Thats odd haha, but also lucky I guess. I just found 2 acadias and mount hood today, along with a few territories. My mount hood collection is getting close to the yosemite and chickasaws now.

If you can't roll hunt, do like I do.. take a five dollar bill to your local car wash and get five dollars in quarters that way. I do that atleast once a month and then give the ones I don't need to my son and watch him put them in his coke bottle piggy bank. Its a win/win situation for us both.
