Modern Difference - Mint Set V. Circulation Strike

This is getting even stranger. Just searched 5 rolls of nickels and 5 rolls of dimes. Rolled by the bank from loose change. I found EVERY nickel and dime, both mint marks, several of each, from 2005-2010 EXCEPT not a single nickel or dime from 2009. Is that just a coincidence?

I finally finished going through 10 rolls of nickels and 9 rolls of dimes. Out of 10 rolls of nickels, there was ONE 2009 (finally found a 2009D in the second to last roll). I don't know why the 2009 year is so rare, but I'll just try another 10 rolls. It was the same story with dimes. I found at least 3 from 1965, but only ONE from 2009. Again, a 2009D in one of the last rolls. I'll just have to get another 10 rolls of dimes as well.

I know I can just buy that one nickel and one dime I need, but it's fun to try and get them from circulation!

you found a 2009 nickel in 10 rolls? thats actually pretty good. I've searched a few hundred rolls of nickels and found a total of 3 2009 d. the 09 mintages are the lowest in about 50 years at a bit under 40 million for the p and a bit under 47 million for the d's.

TJB17 - Thanks for the tip. I think I will officially give up on noodling the 2009P nickel!

justin3651 - Ditto! I wish I had a newer Red Book. My 2011 issue shows mintages through 2008. Is there a place online to find that info, or do I just need to get a new Red Rook? Can you tell me mintage for 2009P dimes?

half n a half - I'll keep looking! I still need a few Prez coins, so after another pass at quarters I think I'll get a sack of loose dollars.

And to explain why the mintages for 2009 dropped so low, do you remember the economy crashing in late 2008? Well that caused a LOT of people to take their change jars back to the bank to convert all that change into cash. This resulted in a HUGE over supply of coins in the Federal Reserve banking system. With so many coins on hand they had no reason to order new coins from the mint. Combine that with the down economy which always results in a lower demand for coins and there was no reason to produce new coins. Mintages for the nickels and dimes were the lowest in about 50 years. Quarter mintages also plummeted. Now we take the next step, with the "lowest mintages in 50 years" speculators scrambled to hoard all the 2009 nickels and dimes they could find. It was so crazy that when the first 2009 nickels showed up (in Puerto Rico ) The first ones that appeared on ebay sold for $118 EACH! After more became available prices dropped but for awhile rolls of 2009 nickels were selling for $100 a roll. It was nuts back then.
