Mixing up clad proofs and silver proofs is possible. The silver ones have slightly different fields and will tone differently, but for the most part are indistinguishable other than their edge. If somebody either doesn't know this or was a bit careless, the surfaces will be similar to all, but the most trained eye. The fact that he accused you of scamming him is unfortunate of course, but doesn't necessarily imply he tried to scam you. He probably did not think he made the mistake and the silver proofs are more expensive. Quote:That must be excruciating. In almost 14 years on ebay, I've had zero problems, either selling or buying. I couldn't imagine three in a row. This last 2012 extended holiday season was the worst I've ever seen. Buying, several coins weren't shipped to me and some others were not as described. Selling, more unpaid items, buyer's remorse returns, and general rudeness and problems than I've ever experienced.

I guess I should feel lucky. In the 6 years I have been buying on ebay I have never had a real problem. The worst thing that happened to me was the time I bought a Morgan from a guy with low feedback. The pic was one of a Morgan in an NGC holder that had been cropped to show a VF coin. To my surprise I wound up with a raw AU of the same date. The seller admitted that he used a "borrowed" pic. My wife on the other hand seems to have several bad transactions every year.

When I got back into collecting in early 2008 after inheriting my Dad's collection I needed to finish the modern stuff - he had just stopped about 1986. I bid and won a number of auctions over about 6 months for the proof sets I needed, looked at them and put them up until I got some Eagle brand albums to display them in out of their boxes but still in their lens. I noticed my latest silver quarters set didn't look right, popped the lens to look at the edges of the coins and lo and behold, they were all clad proofs in a silver proof lens! Emailed the seller on it and he refunded me after I sent that set back. A couple of weeks later I thought to check all of my others (Ok, so I'm slow) and of the 5 silver proof sets that I had purchased from him over the last 6 months, all of them had had the silver proofs replaced with clad! He denied everything and too much time had now passed for ebay to help. He had a 99.9 percent positive feedback with over 10,000 sales, but I can't believe every silver set he sold me had the silver changed out without him being aware of it.

It is true that his ad says silver. Nowhere is clad mentioned but I looked at his feedback and all his buyers give him really good feedback. A 100% positive feedback is hard to maintain as a seller on ebay. At this point I would contact him and I believe it will come down to him having made a mistake, not trying to rip you off and he will rectify the problem. Did you try and contact him before you put this post on the Forum? I've been dealing on ebay for over ten years both as a buyer and seller and have only had a shipping problem once in all that time and that was my fault as a seller. Never had to go to the resolution center. As a seller I fix the problem ASAP and dont wait to the last day. Just my thoughts edgman

I see he has a 14 dayreturn period also. Did you try to contact him through the ebay messages. That's the only way to do it. Then they have copies of your email to him. Its good that you contacted ebay if he didn't get back to you after 5 messages. He did say he would get back to anyone within 24 hours. As a seller I think that's kind of stupid to put in your descriptions. Leave yourself open to problems saying that if you get sick, etc. Anyway you did everything right so far and your protected. No one likes to get the wrong stuff but I think yours will probably be taken care of to your advantage. edgman

Thats very true too I think. Putting in your description to message him if something goes wrong. Who does that? Nothing should go wrong so you shouldnt do that, imo. Anyway, the seller messaged me that he doesn't know how it happened because he puts his clads and silvers in seperate piles, but that he would be shipping the correct coins tommorow. Either way I guess I'm happy and maybe I shouldnt have notified ebay so quickly but as I've said, I've had many problems with sellers before, so I got alittle ahead of myself. Ill have to now spend a little money to ship the coins back, but its ok I guess. I'm not going to keep the wrong coins. Not good for business.

mindsets- whatever you do, please don't bid on my auctions. you are too high maintenance. Seriously, you really should dial it down. I'm sure many ebay sellers have jobs and lives outside of listing things for sale. A 14 day return policy is all the protection you needed. You could have probably notified him that he sent you the wrong coin and then ask him what he wanted you to do with the clad. He might have told you to keep it- since it isn't worth the return postage. I once bought a coin on ebay and when it arrived it turned out to be the wrong coin. the seller was truly sorry and would send the right coin out right away. you know what I did? I returned the wrong coin and got the correct coin in a few days. the seller even sent me a check to cover the postage. I told him it was ok, and that he didn't need to do that. the occasional online hiccup is the cost of doing business when purchasing online.

you kind of make my point with your response. I was only half kidding when I typed what I did... but you are taking this whole thing way too seriously. what's that quarter worth? a couple of bucks? do you see other members of this community starting threads like this and going nuts over a couple of bucks?
also, it's uncool to type things like: "idk why your a jerk for."
embedded in my post was good information. the point of my post was to explain to you that you were making a mountain out of a molehill.

You know you didn't have to buy online? There is reasons we had local dealers. *not trying to start anything, just saying*
I bought a 2005s Proof buffalo. It wasn't the best.. I didn't want to return because it's not worth it. The coins you got are very nice and the seller might of just mislabel them. He might of wanted to put clad but forgot. Just wait for his reply and see what he said's.

cc99999, he said he did it as a precaution to protect himself and he hoped he could work it out without escalating things further. as an impartial observer the way that you said what you did seem kind of rude. this is the post he explained it in. no offense meant. I'm just saying. "I sent him 5 messages 10 mins after I took the package out of my mailbox. I didnt even hve to take the coins out of the 2x2s to see they were clad proofs, though I did. He still has not responded to me. I only alerted ebay to what has happened, I still have to wait 10 days until I can escalate it to the point where ebay would make a decision. I am clearly hoping he responds back to me personally before 10 days and resolves it. I alerted ebay as a precaution to protect myself as an ebay member and customer of their website, but mainly to show them that I am an unhappy camper at the moment."
