If my info on past sale prices is correct... You may have taken the last sale of: $3,737,500.00 And added it to the 1993 sale price (first big sale price?) of $1,000,000.00 To get $4,737,500... And then just guessed a bit more? $98,500 to be exact, to get $4,836,000 which is pretty darn close to your guess.. $350 under. Or guessed $98,850 to be dead on... And $98,500/$98,850 is surprisingly close to the "Hawaii 5-0" value of $100,000 given to it in 1974... So you could have added that 5-0 price to your total and got $4,837,500.. (I should say my total, lol) and then just subtracted down to a number you liked? Lol.
Or when you say you did no numismatic research you mean you did not look up past sales? Because I've come very close to your number a few different ways.. I'm talking very close... But not exact... I just don't really want to put all these different math problems up if your not going by past price... Lol

Lol, geek on? Like math geek? Or just completely random thoughts? Lol Does it have anything to do with past sales? because I'm soooooo close if it does... *edit*- and thinking Hawaii 5-0 is pretty geeky... Lol

Cool! I keep getting close but I need to get the house ready for a gathering tomorrow. I would run a contest to GTG (guess the gathering) but I have a feeling it would last all of 5 seconds.
Cheers!

I must be living under a rock, had to look this coin up and this this must be the one. Here's my hairbrained guess: You were looking at the higer sale estimates, and flipped a coin on whether the first number was going to be 4 or 5. you then took the d10 you had laying around and rolled for the other 6 digits.

Argentum-- yep, that's the coin which inspired the contest. And nice creative thinking! RPG'er, huh? Not the logic which led to my number though. Trickworm-- not going to roll out any more hints yet, it's only been less than a day. I bet someone will come up with the reason behind the number-- there are some smart cookies here on CCF, maybe you're one of them. There might be very subtle clues in some of my future posts as I respond to guesses. If so I probably won't point them out because that wouldn't be as fun To summarize the information already given: - my 'bid' is $4,836,350, approximately - Not based on historical sales price or straightforward numismatics, other than the number is in the ballpark of possible. - I put a lot of thought into the number. I will add that this is not just some random number and that it would be totally cool if the coin sold for this amount, for reasons you'll understand when the answer is made clear. (well, cool for nerdy types at least) Good luck, keep thinking!

nscoinkid1997 -It's not guess the price... It's guess how ThisIsFun came up with his guess...

You took the last hammer price for the coin, added all the years inflation figures to give a "real today" cash value and then added an expected yearly expected return from the original investment price to give a value for the coin going forward.

@TIF: Nope, not an RPG'er myself, but I know a few.
Guessing again, a phone number, without an area code, of 483-6350 relates to the history of the coin in some way. One of the owners of the coin in question has it, or it is one of the phone numbers used by the auction house that is to sell the coin
