I am sorry to hear about your treatment. This seems to be a common thing.... While it should not be necessary, for people worried about this sort of treatment, would a little introduction about yourself be useful to show you are a fair dinkum customer and get off on the right foot? Not sure if it would help, but maybe?

I'm also a YN, and have similar problems. Go to a coin store and they're reluctant to show you the silver, even banks feel the need to advise me that a box of pennies does, in fact, cost $25. Do they think I need to go out and mug someone to get $25 in my pocket?

I don't have a mortgage, kids, any personal loans or any financial responsibilities really. I would like to think I know a little about what I collect. It wasn't like I was asking for 'Aussie coins' I was asking for specific denominations, dates and grades. Ah well. My blood was boiling for a little while but I'm over it now. Choke it up to experience I suppose.

Hang in there Enworb, all a part of the journey. Just for curiosity, how do these compare with the 1918 today ..... These are what I could find .... my pick The one following with the verdigris is probably the best grade of the lot .... (though I think the damage had already been done). These five are probably next: My remaining 8 are not as good.

I called them late in the afternoon yesterday and told them that I would be coming in and what I was interested in. I even complemented them on how nice and neat their shop was when I first got there. Quote: Just for curiosity, how do these compare with the 1918 today ..... It was a bit better than your first one pictured. At best it was a VF-gVF coin but probably worth $100 tops. You have a good collection of 1918s there mate.

Thanks Enworb, it's nice to get some comparison feedback to keep your head in a clear place. It was funny you know that I had written down that I had 13 x 1918's. Then I could only find 11, then I searched (and searched) for the other 2 and found a bag with 5 in it. (Lost the plot back there somewhere eh!).

What the dealer said: "...I cant be bothered letting you look because youre to fussy."
What the dealer was thinking: "I won't be able to fool this kid."
Some months ago I gave the following advice:
"Reach into your pocket, pull out your cash, slam it on the counter and say 'you just lost a PAYING customer!'"

enworb dealer behaviour hasnt changed over the years - I have a couple of bad experiences quite a few years ago but was less than polite then you were - gave them an absolute gob full, flashed my cash and then advised them in no uncertain terms I would bad mouth them to every collector I talked to and then walked out - needless to say they were speechless and horrified looks on there faces when I stormed out - at the time I felt good but in hindsight my behavious wasnt any better then theirs - I admire your restraint and good manners - FYI I to this day will not do business with dealers

It seems thats pretty common all over. Luckily the "Difficult" guy where I am at, seems to be the most honest and fair in town. Luckily, I have multiple places to find coins, and they all know better than the experience you had. Its completely against business ethics

Sorry Enworb, it was my fault, my recommendation. I hadn't been there for a little while.

I should mention that not all dealers have this attitude but it does seem fairly common none the less, in fact one of the best dealers in my opinion posts on this very forum.

It seems to me that some people think it would be a good idea to combine their hobby with making a living but simply dont have the people skills or the sales skills.
I'm not a YN but I've come across some pretty rude dealers in my time. I just chalk it up to experience and now have a good network of approachable, fair and trustworthy dealers where I do most of my purchasing from.
PS I think I have been to the Eastern Suburbs dealer you are talking about and had a similar experience
