My first newp in awhile. Been having some problems with a couple dealers on VCoins so held off buying until today. Couldn't hold back any longer, the urge for new coins is too strong. Diocletian antoninianus. 4.1 g, 21.9 x 22.6 mm. RIC V Pt. 2:306 for Cyzicus. OBV.: Diocletian right, IMP CC VAL DIOCLETIANVS AVG. REV.: Diocletian standing right holding parazonium, receiving Victory from Jupiter standing left with scepter, CONCORDIA MILITVM, A in field, XXI. in exergue.

Very nice details with still a lot of silvering. I like these late Radiate busts.

Really nice example of a pre-reform "radiate" (Antoninianus), with great silvering. I prefer the pre-reform type, to the post-reform "brutalistic" style.

Quality coin IGE - It would not have been much better leaving the mint 1700 years ago

After double checking the catalog on this one, I'm not sure if this is Ric Vii 306 or Ric Vii 306A. Any thoughts on that?

Using Helvetica as a reference I have it as RIC VII 306.

I looked the coin up in RIC V-2. It's RIC V-2 306. Many coins are lumped into one RIC number for this particular coin. The officina marks are "A" to lower case sigma. Could be a dot under the bust portrait. Dots at the end of exergue "XXI" twenty parts bronze to 1 part silver. Dot at the end of Concordia Militum, or not.

It seems to me to have a dot before and after XXI making me wonder if we are missing something on the mint ID or if RIC just got tired of listing variations.

A dot on the left side was also my first impression, but I think it might be the end of the X, if so it's from the Heraclea mint. A similar coin Lanz Auktion 154 nr. 493. But Wildwinds goes for Cyzicus: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/...C_0306.2.jpgWith 2 dots probably also Heraclea. I agree with Doug there are so many variations, in fact you you have te be specialized in these antoniniani.

I am looking in Sear's IV; I have been trying to learn how to use this thing since I got it for X-mas. Anyway...
I found:
(Below is from page 79) D. IMP C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS AVG a. Rad. and ciur. bust r. b. Rad.,dr. and cuir. (or dr. only)bust r.
(Below is from page 94) Sear # 12635 Billon antoninianus. Db (sometimes with dot below). Rev. CONCORDIA MILITVM, as 12633, XXI (sometimes followed by dot) in ex., officia mark A-S(= 1-6) in field. RICv,ii,p.253, 306.
All but the type of bust seams to match up. I think? Not sure if this is any help but its my stab at it. Feel free to corect me, but I say its Sear IV #12635:)

Thanks guys, attribution sure gets confusing on some of these. It does appear to have a dot both in front and behind XXI. I don't see a dot under bust. So I can rule out RIC V-2 306A and stay with 306. Is it Cyzicus Mint or Heraclea? That part still confuses me.
