I was going to go for the duck subscription, but it seems to go against itself. The coins seem to be promoting conservation and they say it's great for bird aficionados, but then the subscription includes a duck call, which is used by hunters, right? These two things seem to be in conflict, but maybe that's just me.

Hunters have done more to conserve animals than green piece ever has. For example Duck Unlimited promotes hunting by creating wetlands. This helps all species of wild life not just ducks. Hunters don't just go out and kill everything that moves. Hunters are required by nature to maintain a balance within the ecosystem. If we were to stop hunting altogether is would cause an overpopulation of certain species which would cause the environment to be overburdened and devastate some areas. Just look at upstate New York and see what an large population of deer will do. It also cause the spread of disease. Another by product would be the destruction of wildlife habitat because we now have to come up with a substitute for all the food that hunters would have provided.

Not to stray off topic, but hunters and fishermen can be conservationists too. Ducks Unlimited members put a lot of dollars into preserving the wetlands and other conservation activities.

Agree!
Real hunters are the best people to conserve wildlife. A real hunter knows how to protect the population to keep it safe and to preserve the species... this is a long-term "agreement" between ducks and hunters. (haha I like it... an agreement). Anyway, it's the way people are seeing hunters now that is different.
Like in any part of everything, there are people in hunters too that don't care about anything than themselves and don't respect the animal population and just doesn't care, kill for pleasure until extinction, etc.

Birds (or duck) callers are also used to get some animal around for observation.

I think the 3 coin subscription will do well. The first coin is nice, the presentation is good and the price of the collection is somewhat reasonable for collectors and duck lovers. Expect a sell out on this one.

Rumours are that the coins will ship every 6 months ending in 2014. Can anyone confirm that? Seems like a long wait is in order.

To bad the mint didn't include a Duck Commander call. If they did, this set would have significantly more appeal and would have been a huge hit.

Question about the $10 Mallard. Mintage is 10,000. Is that a combined mintage of the subscription and individual?

So curious about this.

All wild game have a strong taste of often described as gamey. This is in fact is the animals natural flavor. For example take beef. The beef you buy in the store is fed a special feed that promotes growth. This feed imparts no flavor to the animal. Go buy a cow from a farm that the cow eats a natural diet of grass and get all the required minerals. The taste is much stronger like eating raw beef. Same effect in wild vs farm grown ducks or geese.
