I'm thinking more in the XF40 camp.
The "crud" looks soft, use Brad's product, veri-care or veri-gone (something like that)

Yes, It's truly crud, no damage to the coin at all. I was looking at PCGS photograde last night and I was thinking VF30-XF-40 myself, trying to be as conservative as possible.

WOW! One heck of a roll find!
Reverse pics not to clear but it looks to be VF25-30, $50-60 coin.

VERDI-CAREâ„¢  I'd try soaking in distilled water first and then carefully work the residue with a toothpick. It might come right off. If that fails, try soaking in xylene for a couple of hours. |

Hi, I also agree that this is a great roll find. On the grade issue I usually use the James Ruddy-composed Photograde 19th edition book where F-12 has a reverse-sided description written per the following verbiage, "One side or the other may show a weak area at the top of the stalk." If I am viewing this coin accurately, the right stalk shows an extremely small worn area which in my opinion could possibly allow this coin to grade out at the F-15 level. I personally would hope to get at least VF-25 pricing from an average sale of this coin but could equally envision some finicky buyers justifying the F-15 level grade based upon this minuscule worn down area in the right stalk:  IMHO, mdpmedia |

I'll take a better photo of the reverse of the coin today. It's just the photo and crud. I apprecriate all the cleaning instructions BadThad. I will soak in distilled water today and see what happens.

BadThad. I have been soaking coin for a few hours and got a lot of the stuff off. I of course used a toothpick to work some stuff off and must have pushed too hard. Have a few lines where the patina(or grime not sure) has come off. Is there anything I can do? Should I use Verdichem now or not mess with it?

Probably best to leave it alone at this point. If you get to aggressive, you may end up hurting the coin. Let it dry for a few days and then retake the pics so we can see it.

Only soaked in distilled water so far. Never soaked any coin in acetone. Not sure what to do, thought that was mostly for silver? I was going to do the verdichem next?
