I can assure you I have not been bad to this coin but it is from circulation so something weird could have happened on its way to my hands from the mint. But something tells me that this may have happened at the mint. Can anyone point me to similar examples? Is there a techincal name for this type of thing? It would help to understand what may have caused it. So far the only thing that seems to jive is die fatigue? Edited by Paisa 03/13/2013 5:58 pm

Hi Paisa That one is a really nice find...good pictures too...and a perfect analogy for the look of what's going on with this one."Loonie on fire" Hope someone here can help you out with this.

Hey nancyc,
Thank you for sharing the links. Is there anywhere I can read up more information on trail dies or die bleed?
Thx

It's not a trail die. Did you check coinsandcanida web site? John1

No I have not checked any other website. Isn't there any book on types of coin errors?

Hi nancyc,
Thx. I did check early on loonie errors and it seems there is not much but I will try other searches.

So I searched for "loonie error" and did not find anything similar. The closest I came the description was given as deteriorated die. There was also some mention of the fact that coins with many sides could have some weird problems due to deterioration of the collar causing the coin to move.
Still looking for some other loonie examples.

Hi John1, Thank you for suggesting coinsandcanada. I did look it up and they are showing something that has similar condition. They are listing it as mortar set - Error #1247 - 1996 Loonie. So I guess it looks likely a result of Die Deterioration.

Your welcome. Die Deterioration can cover a lot of areas so being able to narrow it down to mortar set is nice to know. John1
