After all - JFK is the one who pushed for us to put a man on the moon and this event has been classified as likely the most amazing event in the history of mankind's achievements. I really don't want them retired as collector's items since I like the look of this large of a coin in my set (note I did not say pocket ). But what a way to retire it if they have to. Perhaps we should start a $3 bill honoring our prior first ladies. However, seriously I really don't put Kennedy on the same plane that Lincoln is looked on by what may be called a majority of the population. I believe the Lincoln did more for the country than Kennedy did and had a much bigger impact on the nation as a whole. But I do think that it is time to do away with the paper $1 bill and replace it with a dollar coin. I can see the Native American coin being a much better vehicle to accomplish this than the presidential coin series. The penny should be revamped to a different metal platform that is less expensive to use. All our coins do need updating, I can't see returning to the days of yesterday as a viable alternative. As an alternative the ovberse on the: Half dollar = buffalo Quarter = front of the Alamo Dime = Alligator Nickel = Long Horn Steer Penny = Model T ford In addition all coins should be smaller than the next larger coin. n9jig Pillar of the Community United States 1001 Posts	Posted 04/11/2013 7:49 pm Even if the metal was given to the Mint for free it would cost more to make and distribute the Cent than it is worth. The only real solution is to revalue the dollar (ain't gonna happen!) or eliminate the cent altogether. The nickel is in the same boat but it is more difficult to eliminate that due to the difficulties in rounding with quarters. If we had 20 cent pieces instead of quarters it would be easier. Since any real change is pretty much a fantasy exercise anyway, if we were to keep the present valuation of coins and currency then I would suggest a coin slightly smaller than a current penny as the new 5 cent piece, slightly larger for the 10 cent piece and a new 20 cent piece slightly smaller than the current quarter. Each of these three "minor coins" would be copper colored zinc or aluminum. The 5 cent coin would have a flat rim, 10 cent coin would be 11-sided, the 20-cent piece would be scalloped. Major coins could be a new sized 50-cent piece slightly larger than today's quarter, a dollar coin slightly smaller than today's half dollar and a 2-dollar coin slightly larger. the new half would be silver colored (chrome plated or a Cu-Ni mix) with flat edges The new dollar would be the same composition as the new half but 11 sided while the 2-dollar coin would have scalloped edges and perhaps a bi-metallic composition with a copper colored insert.. Eliminate the 1 and 2 Dollar bill and in a few years create a slightly larger 5-dollar coin and eliminate the 5 Dollar bill. Eliminate the $50 bill. With 6 coins and 4 bills we would be doing quite well for the next decade or so while the cashless society ramps up and cash goes away. Report this Post to the Staff
