Found this 1980 p quarter last week, although I know it has no value just wondering if anyone could tell me whats wrong with it. The quarters rim is all the way sunk in around the entire quarter...however the front and back of quarter are stick out past it....anyone know about this. Will try to upload pictures. Also the coin is very dark in color its looks real dirty but darkness actually coin color..thanks

It sounds like you've got a coin that has been damaged in circulation. Of course, it's impossible to know without seeing the coin, but it sounds like it's got some extensive damage and it's been circulated for some time (33 years). If it was a mint error, it either never would have left the production line, or it would have been snapped-up by some collector.

almost sounds like it was acid treated to make it look new again. The acid would eat away the copper core before the coating. But you say it's very dark

Its a really interesting coin to say the least...just wish I could upload these pictures. I've looked all over the net and I guess the closest thing I can see that resembles it is either separation but mostly like clamshell error...just guessing by pics though...(could be just damaged in really weird way) lol the color is also throwing me off and to whoever said the comment about acid, I seen pics of that and your right it looks like that too! Who knows....but as soon as I figure out hiw to post these I will so you all can see! Thanks again

It's possible the two features weren't done at the same time. An acid treatment resulted in the edge, then it was lost/buried before your husband found it with a color that occurred environmentally
