1980 Kennedy Error - Struck On Susan B Anthony Dollar / SBA Planchet?

CoinCbass Pillar of the Community United States 1217 Posts	Posted 04/01/2013 11:24 pm check out these pics. coin is approx 2/3 normal thickness of Kennedy half, weighs less than typical Kennedy half (I am getting it weighed at work tomorrow), and is slightly smaller in diameter. There is reeding on portions of the coin. someone in one of the other chatrooms suggested it could be a kennedy struck on an SBA planchet. My dad had originally suggested a quarter planchet - having forgotten about the SBA. anyone here know where to turn? I figured I would post it a few places on this website. There is still to much detail on the rim for that.a smaller planchet would have less of the letters on the edge and more distortion on them. Id lean toward PMD with someone shaving the edges. I'm no expert tho. An accurate weight will help too. Report this Post to the Staff
biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 04/02/2013 01:37 am I suspect the SBA planchet theory is correct and the weight should verify that. I think the design detail would be considerably weaker with a quarter planchet since it is only half the weight of a half dollar planchet. I just noticed that there is mention of it in the Misstrikes and Errors section of the Red Book- Quote: The Kennedy fifty-cent piece struck on an Anthony one-dollar planchet is very rare. It was found in some CWRs at a bank somewhere in the Carolinas. I thought it was tampered with at first, but since there was reeding on the edge and it did not look like someone shaved/ground it down. Plus it is approx 2/3 the thickness of a half, - how do you fake that? Will let you know what it weighs. that may be the best test Report this Post to the Staff

Should I send to PCGS? Should I keep it or sell it? How many are out there? I saw that there were more 1979 errors like this, so this is a better year. biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 04/02/2013 11:04 am Top error dealer Fred Weinberg currently has two in stock and I found one listed on ebay so there are a few out there but the total population will be fairly small. I would not normally recommend slabbing a no-brainer error(one that is easily recognized for what it is) but when you are approaching a four figure price point, it is probably a good idea to submit it so you can obtain maximum value if you were to sell it. Check with your local dealer to see if they submit to PCGS or NGC and have them submit it for you. You would have to pay an extra membership fee to do it on your own in addition to the grading fee so it is not cost-effective for only one coin. You will probably have to spend $50 or so to get it slabbed but it will be worth it for you. This find deserves some dancing fruit Report this Post to the Staff
CoinCbass Pillar of the Community United States 1217 Posts	Posted 04/02/2013 1:24 pm I had a local coin shop (its a big one in a big city) look at it and he offered me 900 on the spot for it. said it was worth approx $1100 and that it would grade in the MS-60 to MS 62 range. He said MS 61 in his opinion. He said I could get it slabbed and it may increase the value, but he also said I could save the money if someone who knows what they are getting comes along and wants it. I have gotten both forms of advice on here. I think I will sell it as I have only a passing interest in error coins. is there an avenue on here that I could sell it or would I be better off with ebay? I am not in a hurry to sell it - I need to get my picture taken with it for the kids (and to make sure I get a dig in on my dad). Report this Post to the Staff
