A Japanese silver coin actually with Chinese characters! I only collect circular coin so it is not my favourite.

Yep, Japan 1 shu, also known as "isshu gin" (1 shu silver). From the pre-Meiji period of experimenting with different forms of coinage. Here's the NGC database page for this variety, which dates from 1853 to 1865.

Sap I do not collect Japanese coins so I have a simple question. Were these CAST or struck?

I ask because the coin here is cast.

Struck, I believe, but the dies do have a cast-like appearance: crude vertical lines, apparently an attempt at giving it a parchment-like appearance.

The incuse stamp was applied as a second stage of the minting process.

Sap If the coin is supposed to be struck - I think we may have a problem. The coin is clearly cast and I am looking at the raised figures not the background texture. The chop look as if it may be real however.
