From the 2012 RCM Annual Report: 1 Dollar Aureate Nickel : 2,414,0001 Dollar(P):107,105,000 1 Dollar Lucky Loonie: 5,000,000 1 Dollar Grey Cup: 5,000,000 2 Dollars: 1,531,0002 Dollars (P): 82,862,000 2 Dollars 1812: 5,000,000 Considering the mintage numbers of the old style 2012 loonie and toonie, once you consider reducing those by the ones involved (reported to be approx $3,000,000) in the major Brinks truck crash (if they weren't put in circulation), the availability is relatively low.

I got 2 of the old toonies today. The first is up on ebay. We'll see what happens with it before I decided whether or not to keep the second.

don't forget to consider how many have been scrapped in the alloy recovery program

Now I feel lucky for finding that old-style $1. I have yet to get the $2, though.

Have all but the old style ones. I didn't know they even existed. Thanks for the information.

Cool! I never found a loonie nut I did find one of the toonies. Is it known for sure that the truck crash involved the old style coins or were they shipping the new ones before they were announced?

If I recall, you could tell from the photos they were the "old style" coins.

@RoyalSilver: There are "more" but the percentage is different. 119,519,000 loonies total, 2,414,000 old style, percentage: 2.01% 89,939,000 toonies total, 1,531,000 old style, percentage: 1.71% However, you must think about how you're getting these coins in your change. You'll almost never get 2 loonies at the same time because a toonie will cover it, plus you can get 2 toonies in your change. So the difference there is quite large. I don't know why the mint made so many loonies when toonies really do most of the heavy lifting.

I recently did a survey of Internet sellers who had listed 2012 old style loonies and toonies for sale. I contacted 41 individual sellers. I asked these questions: Where did you get your coins: the mint, a bank or another source? 38 replied. Only one received his coins from a bank. 19 received their coins from the mint. Other sources were from mint sets or from dealers at the beginning of 2012. It is likely that the ones that came from dealers were originally obtained from the mint. The source for the coins from the mint were mostly from the three mint boutiques; although the big dealers may have had there shipped directly from the mint. The large dealers have few if any of their stock remaining. They would have planned ordering more later in the year. So the best source for these coins were the boutiques. Winnipeg released less than 15,000 loonies and fewer toonies, Vancouver numbers are unknown as are the Ottawa numbers. If Vancouver release numbers were the same as Winnipeg and Ottawa even twice the Winnipeg amounts it becomes very clear that these coins are very scarce. It is clear that virtually none reached circulation. So where are they? Almost certainly the majority of the production was caught-up in the metal recovory program and destroyed. For clarification on this matter the RCM needs to release the numbers of destroyed coins as well as those listed as "produced".

I have seen about a dozen 2012 old style toonies and no loonies in circulation.

All these reports of no old style loonies being found bodes very well for my circulation find >:)
Also, has anyone else seen or found a 2013 doubled-die loonie? I learned about these at my LCS. Going through 7 O Canada sets, two had weak doubling and one had very strong doubling. Apparently they've been found in circulation, too: finally, a significant error within my grasp!

I purchased a sealed roll of old style 2012 loonies. Paid a premium to get them but I thought it was a good purchase.

What do you consider a "premium" price for a roll? CCN trends lists old style loonies at $2 for an MS-62.

I have looked at every toonie I've gotten in the last 2 years. (All my toonies and loonies go in a jar until I need/want something extra). I have 3 old style toonies, I had no idea there was an old style loonie in circulation. Does anyone have a link to this " truck accident"?
