At coin bourses, auctions or anywhere else I can purchase 1859 Canada cents, I always do so just in case they may be one of the rarer varieties. Usually I strike out but I picked up these two recently and am wondering if I might have something here.

I see doubling of the 5 and 9 in the first coin.
This contributes to the tilting effect of the numbers.
If that is all that is going on------it is a mint error--not a variety.
BUT--there may be something else going on and Rod Turner would have to be consulted---he has documented all the dies varieties.

The second coin looks like a Haxby PC59-394 http://www.vickycents.com/obv-o39.html

The die crack at the T in Victoria and at the last A in Gratia are markers for obverse 39 as well as the deformed base of the last A in Regina. There are four reverses paired with this obverse, the "I" group reverses have a section of vine loop 2 missing as yours does, so likely yours is reverse I1. Look at your reverse closely and see if it matches any of the features found on this page... http://www.vickycents.com/rev-i1.html

The first coin looks like a Haxby PC59-36a1. The die crack at leaf 12 and the recut stem on leaf 9 on the reverse is are the clearest markers I can see. Try to match yours to this page. http://www.vickycents.com/rev-e37a.html The obverse looks like obverse 36a, I usually spot these by how far back the "G" in Gratia appears to be leaning. There is usually a relatively thick blob on the top right side of the T in Victoria. (sometimes to worn to see) http://www.vickycents.com/obv-o36a.html ed

Thanks nybird. After viewing the pictures at your link I agree with your assessment on both coins. I think that identifying these die varieties could get addicting.
