This coin came out with my change yesterday from a metro ticket maching. I looked at it and thought it odd. I compared it another pound coin for same year and not only is the edge inscription dreadful, it is upside down. Other than that a very good fake.

About 5 years ago I saw an "official" estimate that 30% of the UK £1 coins in circulation are fake.

When getting change, I used to refuse them if they looked fake but I don't bother now, they are so common.

Well yeah it workls fine in a metro ticket machine so I guess it is passable. I shall just pop it back next time I get a ticket :)

The orientation of the edge inscription is indifferent.

Maybe, I don't really know publius. I was checking this particular fake against one I saw from a blog online, 2003 coin like mine and it remarked that inscription being upside down was what gave it away as a fake.

The Royal Mint's detection guide does not indicate the orientation of the edge inscription as a diagnostic. And it can't be, because the lettering is applied before striking, & the planchets go into the press in random orientation.
See here for extensive, though not wholly up-to-date, information on counterfeit pound coins.
