I'd have to say VG details. The surface is a little rough (looks like it might be a metal detector find). This is a great coin, though. I like the Cuds on the obverse between 1 and 2 o'clock and the reverse between 3 and 5 o'clock. For the most part, the lettering is very clear. Great find!  |

I agree with Susan assessment as VG corroded ,, probably net AG-3 based on the corrosion. the Cuds are a great authenticator on this coin , although they do Identify the coin as the least rare of the 3 varieties ,, it is still a great coin and a nice one to have in your collection !! Metalman |

VG details sounds good to me. I would consider it net good if I saw it and was planning on buying it. Nice coin.

Thanks for the replys everyone. It's not my coin though. I'm thinking about buying it, but I really couldn't tell the grade. So far, it's for sale for a grand, and the only problem I have with it is that it's corroded.

In my opinion, $1000 is a little high for this coin considering the surfaces. I could see $700-750. Just my opinion.

The porosity and corrosion will probably hurt the grade on this coin. I agree to AG3 maybe G-4 wit VG8 details. I love large cents and owned a VG8 in a an ANACS holder a few years back. I think Susan may have sold it for me. I think $650- $800.00 is a fair price for this coin, I may be off because I have not been buying these for a few years. Good luck! Mike |

The corrosion is what's killing me on this since there's a lot. Also, I can't see the coin in person, and we all know everything looks different in pictures then in real life.

I loaned my RedBook out to a friend, but I thought I remembered reading something in there about the 1804 and a special type. If I remember, it had weird surfaces in the picture in the book, almost like the one posted here. It looked pitted or something....I remember only because I was looking at this series, but of course not the 1804 at this price. I thought I also remembered that there weren't any prices or something.  Does anyone have a copy handy? |

There is a restrike that is a fake, made in 1860. This one is real based on the Cuds, the crosslet 4 in the date and the large fraction. VG-8 details and over priced by about $200. Have you tried a lower offer to the dealer? |

Just my opinion, but the corrosion would bother me. Sometimes with early copper it seems like every example you see has corrosion or other problems, but I would hold out for a nicer one.

I emailed the seller before and he reassured me the coin is real because he took it to a few coin dealers. Tights, I checked in the RedBook and from what I can see in the coin, it does look real. I decided that I'm not going to buy the coin. I'm either going to hold out for a non corroded/porous version for it, but I think I have my sights set on an 1804 quarter. I just need to find one...if anyone knows of any hit me up |
