Thought I'd slip this one in ... After all, they did circulate alongside the contemporary "Little Sisters" which were also worth a Half Cent in copper! Nowadays, these, the only Hard Times token Half Cents, are listed in the Red Book and avidly collected by Half Cent afficionados.

How about another counterstamp, too? This stamp was used by gun maker Samuel Colt on his bullet molds and firearms:

Here's another counterstamp on an 1837 large cent: This counterstamp is the hallmark of William Levis, a Philadelphia silversmith. Born in 1785, he died in 1842. Like fellow silversmiths, gunsmiths and other craftsmen, Levis worked at a variety of trades. He's listed in the 1839 Philadelphia City Directory, selling oils and leather at 228 North Third Street. Levis probably gave this coin out in change at his shop; this, anticipating that it would circulate about Philadelphia and provide word-of-mouth advertising for his wares and services.

My 1837 large cent (sorry - no counterstamps on this one!) - Is a very weakly struck date a feature of all 1837 cents?

TJ .... That "W.S" counterstamp ... William Shakespeare?
It's interesting to see the rather broad range of color, hue, on these 1837's.
