Came across this medallion recently. 38mm in diameter, the same as the silver maple leaf. Composition unknown. Non magnetic though. Any idea if it is minted by The Johnson Matthey? All information are welcome. Thanks.

Amaths, that definitely is an interesting piece. I don't think I've ever seen a round made by Johnson Matthey that said "Johnson Matthey Mint." Do you think its made of silver? Could be some sort of Canadian commemorative. I don't think its a fake but it still seems pretty different.

Thanks abliss. I know what you mean. I was puzzled as well when I first saw it. There is no logo or any mark that can identify it as the work of the Johnson Matthey. I don't recall seeing "Johnson Matthey Mint" before, either. It could very well be that it has nothing to do with the JM that we know of. Perhaps someone was trying to promote his products by "borrowing" the well-known name.
I highly doubt it being silver, at least not 999. As if it contains any silver, I have no clue. All I know is that it doesn't stick to my fridge magnet. But I can feel it has some density when holding it.

Amaths-JM has facility in Brampton Ontario so it is possible that this medal was made from there. I think yours is a real deal. Here is a medal from Engelhard for comparision. You can see both of these medals have Maple leaf on one side and Ontario on the other. There are no metal purity to be found on both of these medals. I think these were made as promotional items, gift etc....but not bullion items as we normally see.

Thanks NVU. I truly hope mine is a unique rare piece and one day I could retire on it. Nice medal. At least yours says engelhard loud and clear.
abliss: is the one on the left a little bigger? I would vote for it as fake as well. It doesn't look as fine as the other one. Although I am not certain if I could spot it if there was no real one side by side.

Amaths - Nice pickup on the JM medal. It's the first I've seen and it's really unique in its own way.
abliss - The one on the left is the fake one. There are too many differences on those rounds but the ones that stand out the most is the child legs, they're too fat and not proportion to the whole body. Also there are too many lines where the child left hand touched his mom dress. I can go on and on but those are the two most stand out when compare the fake one from the real one.

Yes you guys are correct. The one on the left is fake. I believe its made of zinc or tin. As you can see the fake one is about 2-3 grams off.

I believe Johnson Matthey only made the freedom rounds in 1985 and 1986. Here is a 1985 version.

Nice 5 gram bar NVU! I'm guessing it was engraved for a casino?
