@ksimms3 Not a bad idea... But you do realize that I can't go back further than 3 months in the past when looking for completed transactions on ebay? So I couldn't, for example, analyze the price of the Glass Ladybug since it's release.

Just wondering if anyone has had their Candy Cane delivered front CP yet? When did you order and did you order via phone call or direct ship? I ordered mine last Saturday via direct ship, I got it Thursday night.

CP Phone = We will take as many order as possible and will ship it to you if we have extra stock. Our inventory is not real inventory and we can always blame that we over sold.

Go Figure, I got the dreaded back ordered email from the mint today, for the candy cane this time, this masterclub membership will probably not get renewed , there are too many avenues available now to secure the coins I want at issue price..

^^ I agree. 90% of the coins I order from the mint I cancel and get it from CP or other sources for the same price.....the mint is definitely loosing out on business IMO

Quote: 90% of the coins I order from the mint I cancel and get it from CP or other sources for the same price.....the mint is definitely loosing out on business IMO But they are not really losing business if you simply buy through a different distribution channel. IMO, this is exactly what the Mint wants us to do; stop buying directly and buy from dealers and especially Canada Post. If the average cost to ship a coin is $10 and the average coin is $100, MC free shipping cost them 10% PLUS the cost of handling, packaging and maintain a large shipping department (union labour and expensive overhead). If instead the mint can simply send a few truck loads to Canada Post distribution or dealers, they avoid much of those costs and increase their organizational flexibility. Granted, I don't have numbers to support it but I suspect that the cost to sell a coin to an MC member and the cost to sell to a dealer at a discount is not significantly different. And the cynic in me suspects that this also allows the government to use one very profitable crown corp ( RCM) to prop up another dying crown corp (CP)

I'm not quite sure that the inefficient shipping department of the RCM is something planned. Why the RCM created Master Club? For how many years? If they want to sell just to the dealers, RCM wouldn't need a MC.

While CC-Ottawa is correct that the Mint is not losing business by you getting the coin through a diffent channel, they are probably losing in their profit margins. Dealers such as CP typically save 15% off the issue price, which means that CP only paid around $128 for the Candy Cane and the Mint lost out on that profit of $22 which they would have got from selling to the cusotmer directly. Also, I really dont think that there are many people who are MC members who only buy 1 coin at a time... so the cost of shipping can be averaged out making the shipping cost per coin quite a bit less.
However, on the flip side, one area the Mint might benefit from you buying through their dealer network is that there are a lot of coins that just dont sell (or take a very long time to sell). So the Mint may lose on one coin but gain on the additional sale of others. The Mint will also save on costs associated with storing excess invintory long term.

Not exactly. There is a cost to selling directly and incurring labour and overheard costs that eats into that 22$ contribution to profit. It may actually eat all of it. In the case of many MC sales, there is also a commission paid to the rep. I'd also add that plenty of MC do in fact order single coins. Many here will tell you that they place multiple orders in order to avoid delays. I don't know if that strategy helps them but say for the 1/2oz O Canada series, 12 39.95 coins are being shipped at a cost of 7-10$ in shipping alone. Far more than the dealer discount percentage. I checked my own purchases over the past year and my average coin is roughly $100 which is why I used that example. If shipping and handing plus a needed logistic department are more than 15-20$, they are better off selling to dealers. Again, without hard numbers, we are talking opinions. Quote:I'm not quite sure that the inefficient shipping department of the RCM is something planned. Why the RCM created Master Club? For how many years? If they want to sell just to the dealers, RCM wouldn't need a MC. Why are you assuming that delays are a result of an inefficient shipping department? My information is that delays are usually a result of production issues - not shipping. The MC was created many years ago at a time when a major distribution channel, like say Canada Post, was not being employed. A year ago, the mint promised changes to the MC program. This may be part of those changes. Again pure speculation on my part but as others have noted, the value of MC has been seriously eroded recently to a point where buyer don't bother attaining MC status - they simply buy elsewhere.

Ordered the candy cane via phone on Oct.15.Within 20 minutes of ordering I decided to cancel.I also phoned to confirm it had been cancelled on Oct.15 and 16th.They said yes it was cancelled.Well, today my doorbell rings and lo and behold they shipped the coin.It even states on the bill that it was cancelled.I was on the fence as to weather to keep it or send it back.I showed it to my mother and she said keep it,it is a beautiful coin.So I guess I will be keeping it.The more I look at it the nicer it looks.

I agree that RCM is trying to push people to CP. I feel like I am helping the process as well by posting about availability of mint product at CP. RCM needs to remember how much Masters Club members spend and treat them accordingly. When I read posts about people ordering the candy cane coin from CP weeks after I ordered from RCM and already receiving their coin it is disappointing to say the least.

Speaking on the profit margin of $22 that the mint will ultimately get from Canada post sales vs Selling directly. Yes, Canada Post likely pays about 85% of the list price, but that still isn't the 'cost'. I'm sure an ounce of silver ($24) + colour, and a little trinket of glass would put the manufacture of this coin at less than $50. Add to that a 5% commission to the m/c rep, $10 shipping/overhead/inventory etc/coin, and you're up to about $62.50 cost. Still getting close to a $80 profit per coin - through the M/C program.
I don't see the downside for the mint to continue direct marketing for a long long time.
