Ugly isn't a bad word around here. We have had discussions about the Prez Dollars specifically just to give our opinions both positive and negative. I think most of them are ugly personally but The issue here I believe is when to make comments like that. If a new member or even a long term veteran just got the Brand New Jefferson Dollar and showed it to us because they were so proud to have a new coin then I would not talk down about it. JMHO

Andrew, you make a very good point. While many collectors do not like the Presidential designs, they are still obviously a highly collectible coin and those people who collect them should feel that they can share that collection with support from the rest of the membership.

It's not the actual words "junk" or "junky". It was the context they were used in. Please understand that there are many forums where people can go and be made to feel uncomfortable. The purpose of CC is to have a place that is peaceful where we can all enjoy the hobby and learn from each other.

Especially because we have so many members from all over the world, it is important that we all respect each others' countries' coins and collections. This does not mean that we have to like them, just not put down others for collecting coins that don't appeal to us.

One of the reasons that we have emoticons is to soften the written word and help to get the actual meaning across. It is very easy for a joke to be taken seriously from just the written word.

I simply don't want anyone to feel that their collection or their interests are less important than anyone else's here. This forum is a great opportunity to truly share this hobby and expand collecting horizons. All I ask is that everyone consider their words before clicking on the Post New Reply button so that we can keep CC the family-friendly, community-oriented forum that it was intended to be.

I guess one way we could put it would be to say, "One mans ______ is another mans treasure and that is SO true in numismatics!" As I have stated the world of possibilities in this hobby are endless and their is something for every budget. Even the smallest of children, with no financial budget, can get into this hobby as long as Dad and Mom keep the pocket change flowing or DAD doesn't wake up while they are helping themselves! Doesn't take much to start a collection but it does take a little heart and determination to continue one!

I guess in a way I am a darksider, in that my most recent purchases have included gold 1/10 ounce Pandas, Maple Leafs, and a 1/2 ounce gold French rooster.

Hi, MountainLady. Great to hear from you. Gary said that you were investing in high grade coins and by this post I would say you are. Do you have any pics you can fire up? Actually, mom, I have some others and not all gold. I will put up some pics when I get the camera out again. Yes, I have to admit, I am feeling the call to the darkside. As a side bar,I have experienced something recently, or have at least just become aware of it. The composition of the coin effects my attitude towards it. I really like gold, silver (Duh) and copper. I do not have any interest in coins made from anything else. No disrespect meant to the nickels of the world and I would be happy to own the keys for all of them. I guess it is not an intrinsic value thing when you consider copper, so go figure.

Hey Andrew, I want to extend my sincere apologies for anything offensive I have posted in the past about the Pres. dollars. I have only recently started to enjoy coins of the world. Until now, my appreciation has only been for U.S. coins. I have probably taken my frustration with the U.S. mint out on the Pres. coin. I just feel that they have gotten into generating money and not the quality coinage that I expect. No disrespect ever meant.

Hey Jim1953 I absolutely love my silver but have collected almost everything the U.S. has ever minted. Don't much care for dimes or nickels either except for one exception....The INDIAN/BUFFALO NICKEL which is my favorite coin of all time. I have slowed some by only buying those that I actually can see and touch!!! With prices escalating it is hard to pass up anything older than 1930 in fine or better, especially those with mint marks, as the buffalo seems to be disappearing in this area! And yes, before you ask, I went plumb crazy in 2005 with the new Buffalo nickel but realize I will have to keep them for an eternity before they will ever be worth much. Now the massive amount of proof buffalo's I managed to pick up are already increasing in value so my new herd does have some worth already!

Crystalk64, I know what you mean about the Buffalo nickel. It is one of my absolute favorites. I past on a UNC Comm. set of Indian/Buffalo coins at an auction last night. They were at $65 and I was not sure about their value and past on them. Heck, they are worth $250.00. Should have known as the world loves the Buffalo. Jim

I am so hooked that when I passed a cement buffalo in a man's yard today I had to wonder just how heavy that thing really was and what it would cost me to buy one! My wife thinks I have gone off the deep end but I still can't get that cement buffalo (very well painted I might add) off my mind!!! I could put it out here in my year near my buffalo flag and my buffalo hunter parking only sign!!! Of course I could always pose for a photo in my buffalo shirt and buffalo hide
