I somehow missed this thread until today. Wow, what a story! Great job Razzy in helping to get this guy caught. Hopefully you are able to get your money back, and this guy gets the punishment he deserves!

Just read the entire thread for the first time. One thing I noticed is the atricle said the guy had fake Franklin's as well, and Razzy mentioned getting some Franklin's from this guy, have you checked those out as well Razzy?

yeah halfhunter - the halves I got from him as well as the silver eagle were all real so that's why my loss was only about 775 vs the full 900

Was there any mention of year the fake silver eagles would have been if he did in fact make any?

You are the only person or news source to ever mention an ASE in conjunction with all of this. Where did you get your information from?

Quote from first news article link. Quote:Police found what looked like a pipe bomb in a dresser drawer, but the state police bomb squad determined it was unfinished and not explosive, McKay said. When police ent back into the home they found "an excessive amount of counterfeit coins" such as Morgan silver dollars, Benjamin Franklin half dollars, American Eagle coins, and packaging materials, McKay said. Mention of AE coins but no mention of composition.

my question is, I wonder if it is best always to have a magnet and a scale in hand when making purchases.
I think buying OGP holders is a good idea, but one must know the weight and tolerances of the CC in an OPG holder.
If it passes the weight and magnet, chances are its real. FadetoBlack hit it on the head though, those broken holders are a dead give away that something is amuck.
Congrats on a job well done. Hopefully persistence will pay off.....in more ways than one.

What a great thread!
And hopefully the Secret Service goes after the sources this guy used to obtain counterfeit coins, the fake slabs, and the other goods he needed to assemble his fakes. Otherwise, the real counterfeiters will just learn from their mistakes and come back with better goods.
