1981: with commodity markets shell shocked the previous year and precious metals completely out of their usual trading range, we didn't see too many beautiful commemoratives that year.
Though many currencies were ravaged by inflation in the seventies, the circulation coinage had not yet been adapted. Coins were growing bulky, relative to their purchasing power. In the UK, 1981 marks the last year when "New Pence"/"New Penny" was mentioned on coins.

1980 25p (crown) from St Helena, commemorating the Queen Mother's 80th birthday. This much-loved lady lived on for over 21 more years!

This prooflike silver (0.510) coin is not very popular despite its low mintage, largely because of the common silver clad circulation commemorative which sells far below face value.

1978: you realize how long ago it is when finding coins of countries that no longer figure on the map.

The example here is a 2 Mark coin of the former DDR. The lie was coined in the name, for 'Demokratisch' it wasn't in the least. (Something US citizens should remember, not allowing government to turn "Liberty" into a coined lie.)

I'll keep the subject on the DDR with a 1977 20 Mark commemorative. There have been a handful of Gauss commemoratives made, but this is the one with the best design. It showcases the Gaussian distribution function which is pervasive in all science, engineering, math, and statistics.

An magnificent coin, picturing the Gauss distribution.

I remember seeing it also on the 10 DM banknotes by the end of the 20th century, but this design is outstanding.

I'm a little thin on coins from the 70's in my photos but here is one from the dual dated 1776-1976 set.

1976 5 Mark Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen. I don't know a thing about the guy, but the coin looks cool!
