to compliment what Tbone shared, I would also look at it like this for a buyer - If I take, say, a PCGS 1916-D in AU53, one dropped hammer at HA on 1/2011 for $7,188 and than ebay on 4/2011 for $7,099.:

1 - HA w/buyers premium of 17.5% was included in the sell price
2 - ebay charged no buyers premium and granted there was an $89 savings on the ebay price but still market average for Q1 and Q2 2011

this exists on several other random examples I looked at just now

the BP is market acceptable since it will more often than not, jive with the bay
again though, this was a small sample of 4 random coins. we could look at a larger sample and see if there is a huge disparity

You need to figure out what the seller netted too.

The HA seller netted $5,206.33 ( * 1.175 = $7,188).
The ebay seller paid a final value fee of $250 or a seller net of $6,849 (http://www.fees.ebay.com/feeweb/feecalculator)

That's one million five hundred twenty-seven thousand five hundred dollars last night, for the finest 1796 quarter in the whole wide world.

Well I have MY answer... I bought the 6th cheapest item out of a $22M auction.

A pedigree and a hole filled in one!

Congrats BStrauss!

I watched some of yesterdays live floor sessions and today's internet only session and the prices some of the lots were fetching blew way past the price guide estimates. Pretty impressive. I imagine that the pedigree impacted the interest in the auction and the number of bidders vying for lots, but I wonder if these coins will ever fetch that kind of money again if the new owners ever went to sell. I saw some coins sell for over triple the high end price guide estimates!

I walked away with two lots, both ex Col Green. Both fantastic coins for my mid grade seated type set.

I, too, walked away with two ex Col Green Walkers. A VF 1918-D and a AU 1920. Fortunately, they didn't command too much of a premium over previous hammers.

I was tracking a few. One AU 1920 WLH went for 40% over guide. The SLQ's I was watching all exceeded guide by a lot. Congrats to those that found deals.

I was going to try to get some FB mercs, but for some reason Heritage kept rejecting my credit card verification number. I would have won the 1916 MS64FB, but HA didn't like my information. Really, really bummed about this. Congrats to those who got something.

That 1796 Quarter is absolutely stupid!

Back when I bought my avatar coin (only coin I ever bought from a major auction house), the BP was 15%
If your not willing to factor that in, it's fun just to watch :-)

Double guide price seemed to be about the average going rate for coins below $1500, at least for the coins that were both CAC and ex Col Green pedigree. Varied by series of course, but double guide price was pretty common. I do think it will be interesting when these start showing up on the open market such as ebay to see what they fetch. I read an article by Laura Sperber over at Legend about how she thinks the prices on higher end coins may see a jump of 10% to 15% in the coming months from the "BEYOND MOON" money these coins would fetch. In other words, the coin market in general may rise with the tide just because of this auction. That might be a bit over zealous but who knows.

Here's the article if anyone's interested

I bid on a couple of bust half dollars and lost both as the bids went beyond what I was willing to pay.

From the coins I saw, particularly in Session 4, they all seemed to be graded very conservatively by NGC. When doing my research for the coins I wanted to bid on, I got the impression that the Newman coins were treated differently than regular submission NGC coins that received the same grade. The Newman coins appeared either undergraded, conservatively graded, or just very very choice for the grade. Did anyone else notice this? Maybe it was just in the type coins I was looking at, which was exclusively the seated liberty types. I'm not complaining though, for me it was all about the eye appeal more than the grade on the slab.

Actually I noticed the opposite, but I really only looked at a handful of coins in the 3cs series.

/1/ The NGC grades were lower than Mr. Newman's notes on the envelopes (e.g. "Brilliant Proof" vs. AU55)

/2/ The 3 coins I looked at seriously were all, IMHO, fairly graded.

I won a nice 1846 Tall Date Seated Liberty half at what I thought was a fair price. Not cheap, I didn't expect that. But less than I thought it would bring. NGC AU58 for $835 including shipping. www.ha.com/1190*33706 See what you think.

Best Regards,

George
