Do the die cracks raise or lower the grade?

What are the small horizontal gouges above and below "we" on the reverse?

AU-55, die cracks do not hurt grade. The horizontal gouges above and below "we" on the reverse are bag marks.

Actually some folks like me think they add character, but don't affect price..
Usually die cracks = older dies failing = sometimes mushier strikes.

Agree with the assessment above, AU, and squiggly lines and marks from
hitting other coins are also sometimes called "chatter".

Thanks IndianGoldEagle.

Do the die cracks effect the value or are they so common in 1921 Morgans it doesn't have any effect?

On a 1921, die cracks are almost the rule rather than the exception - the dies were pushed hard to achieve the enormous production. This one's pretty well-struck for 1921 and lightly circulated.

Briefly looking at the VAMs I couldn't find one that matched. They all look much further along than this one.

AU-58. Die cracks don't hurt the grade, they just give it a VAM. You can find if your VAM is valuable or not at VAMworld.

Yeah, it's undoubtedly an early die state of something, but it'd be a painstaking process to figure out what. The best "smoking gun" attributes will be the odd shape of the crack between the 4th and 5th left-side stars, the cracks through TES_OF without a crack from S-O, the odd one above the M in AMERICA and the crack extending inward from the C to the wreath. It's safe to say that it's not a value-added VAM, though.

There is a crack, actually two, between S-O. From the belly of the S curving downward and from the top of the O curving upward so they don't connect.

The one above the M starts at the serif on the top of the E straight across to the M where it more of an impression, like a shift in planes, not a crack which would be a line on a single surface.

FWIW the 2x2 it came in had AU-50 written on it.
