Hey all, I have been posting on the US and CRH areas, and have come across hundreds of Canadian coins.

I am seeking help to determine what cents and nickels dates to look for (I am pretty solid on dimes and quarters, and what years are silver).

So far I have hundreds of nickels and over 1,000 cents and am not sure of value or what to look for.

What reading I have done suggests cents are worth close to 5 cents now because of them being discontinued and melted by the Mint. I have checked out the Coins and Canada site also but not sure how updated that is.

Thanks all!

Welcome!

Post a few pictures of your coins and that would help start things.

In my experience it is kept as up to date and reliable as any other source. I would say in the order of 98% or better. I use it almost daily myself.

I am also wondering if people are paying premium just for rolls of cents or nickels?

I think the only premiums people are paying for common circulated coins is for melt value. This translates 2-3 cents for solid copper cents (pre-1997) and about 6-7 cents for solid nickel 5 cent coins (pre-1982). The exception to the rule is varieties and rarities.

Being retired from circulation does not always generate a premium. Just look at circulated Canadian silver coins. Almost 80 to 90% have been reclaimed / melted and most survivors still only fetch melt value. You have to back to the 1940s for dollar coins and pre-George VI era for all other circulated silver coins to see values well above melt .

You have to go way back to get into the numis value of a coin rather than its metal content to get a decent premium out of them.
