I am planning to buy some new Morgans to fill a few of the common date holes in my Dansco, and my LCS's current price is $24.00 per coin for average circulated examples. Even though this is $9.00 over spot, is it a good price or could I find a better one elsewhere?

It depends on how "average" their circulation is and what the dates are. If you are looking at the common of the commons, I would imagine that you could find better prices elsewhere, though I will admit that I regularly see them in XF condition for $35, which is more than I am willing to pay.

Of course, if you buy 5+ maybe you can haggle him down a bit.

if you buy 5 or more then you could ask for $22 each. Average circulated common dates sell on ebay for $30 and slighly good dates sell for $35. If you're buying only 1 then $24 is fair.

From my experience "average circulated" often turns out to be VG.
To me that would mean common date coins shouldn't be much over silver spot.
$20-22 per coin?

Seems like a good price, see if you can get him to go down a bit on price :)

That is a good price unless the coins are very low grade.

I've never seen a Morgan priced at $24.00. Never. They don't exist in my world- no matter where I look- internet, LCS, antique shops, over the rainbow, etc. I too would like to meet a $24.00 Morgan. I believe someone posted on here a while back that they remembered having their pick at Morgan dollars at shops/shows for $10.00 a piece in the mid-1980's.

Back when I was obsessively building my 1921 Morgan VAM collection - 2005/2006 - I was regularly getting them for less than $20 on ebay in Mint State. Those days are over, forever IMO.
