Hello I'm new to the forum and coin collecting I'm looking for a few suggestions on buying a 1890 CC Morgan from a friend. my friend is selling this coin at $440 is this a good price? My friend says its a ms-60 or ms-61 as there is a few small scratches on the reverse, but has a nice mirror finish. thank you... *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I believe the coin has circulated and may grade around an AU-53/55 or so. A certified AU-55 may auction for around $250-275. An NGC AU-55 PL hammered at about $247 back in April on Heritage.

Is it me or do the fields in front of Liberty's face look rough like they've been buffed or something like that? They definitely don't seem to be shining through like the field parts around the stars. That could be a problem.

The reverse looks heavily brushed; I would not buy this coin at any price. Thing is, the obverse certainly looks to have reflectivity. So, the whole coin is heavily polished, badly enough to cause reflectivity or....
Somebody committed the unspeakable act of brushing a DMPL Morgan.

If you value the friendship either: -- get him to slab the coin, or -- pass on the purchase.
Too much money involved unless YOU can make a definitive evaluation. And since you're asking here you probably can't.

The coin should be in a righteous "MS" slab if you are in doubt.

Just pass on this one totally. Buy one of the common dates in a GSA holder for around $200-225.

Look at the 4th and 5th left stars, and under the chin, for a hint as to why it was brushed. And note the toning - that's "I got left to sit out on a desk after they cleaned me" toning.
I don't really like the reverse for authenticity either, but that could be due to the imaging.
