Now that I see the photo of a dual dated half dollar, I really want one.

Out of my price range and they're probably do one of these out of nowhere, 1 month only sales specials which doesn't give collectors a chance to get the coin.

Either one of the 2014W (single date/dual date) gold coins would do, though a 50K limit is too high for a 3/4oz gold coin. The RP Buff is about that, and there is such a glut on the market for the RP, it was oversubscribed. The big buyers bought too many and this gold issue might follow it. 25,000 max is reasonable.
It would be neat to have a four-coin West Point silver Kennedy set, 2014-W proof, reverse proof and dual date 2014-W proof and reverse proof. It makes way more economic sense than a single gold coin even though it would be the "golden" anniversary of the coin.

From the Mint News Blog (posted today)... Plans do seem to have coalesced for lower priced numismatic products to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half dollar. There will reportedly be a four coin set with coins from the Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point Mints with each coin carrying a different finish. A clad version would be available priced at approximately $15 and a silver set would be available priced at approximately $100.

HERE is some of the detailed opinions of the CCAC during their discussions with the Mint. Some really interesting opinions.

Just got an e-mail from the Mint for the regular-issue 2014 half dollars. But this tantalizing bit was at the bottom: "2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy Half-Dollar. Watch our website for special products later in the year to mark this milestone." So they are GONNA do SOMETHING. Unless, of course, they later decide to do nothing. "They also serve, who only stand and watch."Best Regards, George

I got that same e-mail just a bit ago. The "later in the year" bit makes me anxious.

I don't own a gold coin but have been thinking about picking one up for awhile. I'm thinking that I should maybe make this my first gold coin what are y'all's opinion? Just wish we could learn of a date for this release. I'm also a big fan of baseball so I've thought about maybe buying the hall of fame coin coming out.

My opinion is, the devil is in the details. It is still quite a stretch to assume that a gold 2014 Kennedy will be forthcoming.
If it is, how many will be made, how much will it cost, will it be a high-total-distribution coin that you get buried in, will it be a great contrarian play like you sometimes get from the Mint (Jackie Robinson and Library of Congress bimetallic, 1995-W silver eagle are all examples), etc.
If you want to buy a gold coin now I would try to find something already in existence. You can buy a half-ounce First Spouse for surprisingly close to melt (I'm trying not to make this a commercial!), or American Gold Eagles, lots of world coins. I would stay away from raw gold unless you can tell a counterfeit from the real thing (there is tons of counterfeit gold out there uncertified).
Good luck!
