I received 2 sets today, I also had some issues with scratches, however I think it is with the plastic casing. One set the plastic casing was lose and when the coins shifted the scratch was not on the coin. However my sets will be exchanged.

I tried to convince myself that the scratches were on the plastic but when I angled the case they were definitely below the plastic cover case.
Four more coming on Saturday....hopefully they will be better.
I was leery right from the start when there was a paper inside the sets basically telling me to ignore any scratches as they are most likely on the plastic case. "They do not need to be returned"...yeah, right.
No issues with my 2012's....and now 0/2 with the 2013's

I did A search on e-bay for sets for sale, And if you look, there are A number of sets that have the same thing, (Listed for $189.00 or more) First I can't believe that these sets would be mailed out looking like this, And second, Don't people know that they can still order from the mint and not pay the high prices listed on e-bay ?

This has always been common on ebay. Most of my experience was 10 or 15 years ago, some things never change. Nothing to do with coins or PM, I've seen similar on completely unrelated products. If you are a good buyer, you can get great deals, but some people have more money than time. You can bet they are not seasoned collectors, the seller does not care.

Dale U: Great pick up....most sets for sale on ebay are using the stock photos but from the real ones I could actually see there were quite a few with the same marks as my sets...there was a Kennedy there that was trashed much worse than mine The ASE marks are in the exact same place... I think this will become a big deal very soon as soon as a bunch of sets get delivered. MANY returns both to the Mint AND to ebay sellers.. You read it here first.....thanks again Dale U

If a lot of sets go back, how does that affect the production numbers? Does the mint just dust it off and ship it to some other sucker? I don't think they can mint more if the problem is the coins themselves.

Returns show up as negative numbers on the sales report. They will not be obvious until it sells out and until then they just decrease the + numbers.
...and then comes the yearly audit which usually drops the number even more.
Supposedly the Mint does not re-ship returns marked as "damaged"....

My set came in and it is going back out. The ASE has a long blemish on the obverse behind Liberty. Those pics look like they were taken with the plastic sheet still on the case. Peel that off. The case itself comes apart easily to check the coins. The notice does not say scratches. It says any gray smudges on the case can be wiped clean.

Plastic film was removed before the pics were taken but I didn't know the plastic case "easily" separated. I will do this if tomorrow's sets have issues.

Look in the upper right hand corner. There is a notch there that you can easily insert a dime or flat head into and pop it right open with no damage. The cases are not sealed.

Thanks... Hmmmmm.....I should be able to assemble a nice looking set choosing from the four I get Kind of weird that coins can be moved between sets...all sorts of devious possibilities come to mind

Thanks: Quote: smokeriderdon Look in the upper right hand corner. There is a notch there that you can easily insert a dime or flat head into and pop it right open with no damage. The cases are not sealed. Edit1: I got my delivery today. This is mine in the case without the plastic wrapper. The blurring is due to my scanner not focusing well with the case in the way, but you can easily see the unsightly scuff marks over the ASE. Similar on the half. Two of my three sets came this way. Upon removing the case, it became obvious the case had the scuffs, not the coin. However, without the case, and with the proper viewing angle under the light, it seems the half has some rippling. It's fine, but still not too difficult to see. Looks like calm water with a slight breeze on it. Would the mint exchange cases or do I have to send the whole thing back? Edit2: I bought three of the 2012 sets from the mint for $149.95 and sold two on ebay for $239.95 each in less than eight hours at the end of May. Sort of kicking myself for not holding out longer. Edit3: With the case removed.

Interesting....but trying to sell that set will get you an immediate return and all your comments saying the marks are on the case won't hold water.
I just find it weird that all the "cases" are marked in the same place...coins I could accept but cases?
Return it before it sells out and get a replacement...
It would be interesting to see a pic of the coin in the case and one of the same coin with the top casing removed.
