Ok guys, I just GOT my set. I look at the case
my Mt Rushmore quarter.... below George, and right on the second L of the word Dollar and then on the edge of it below it, I have two black spots...
like WOW... I cant believe it, how does a proof set have two black spots?!?!?!?
How do they just let that slip by wow!
I am sending back my set, I want my money back for that defect and I dont care if I cant get another set.
I been a big time supporter of this series... not anymore.

It seems obvious that a lot of what people are seeing is actually on the case. My ASE looked like it had scrapes ner the rim. I removed the cover and hit it with compressed air and the "scratches" blew off. It was actually slivers of plastic from the case. The blemish on the coin was not really noticeable with case on. Soooooo, I wouod suggest CAREFULLY removing the cover and examining the coins directly.

Yep... the case is the problem; THANKS for the tip of removing the cover. I would have sworn my ASE was scratched and never imagined the case could be opened so easily. I took the cover off, wiped the plastic with a smooth cloth and re-applied it. Viola! Once again, another reason to come here to talk about coin collecting!

Smokeriderdon, I did what you suggested and you are right, I took the cover off both of my sets and it is the case that has the blemishes, Not the coins, Once the cover was removed my coins look very nice... So I am glad that you had A solution to the problem... Guess I will be keeping my sets after all....
Once again, Thank you...

Smokeriderdon...I am now actually hoping that my sets have marks "on" the ASE and halves...I did my best to confirm they were on the coins but I will defer to everyone's results. Great info about the case and I am looking forward to trying it myself today when my sets arrive. Now I wonder if all the returns marked as "damaged" will be reshipped out. Normal policy would say no but the jury is still out on this one.... Damaged ones reduce the final total sales numbers....the 2012 set ended up in the 48k range after minting a tad over 50k

Quote: I took my plastic off and that brown spots on the quarters are still there lol There is no excuse for EITHER the brown spots OR the marks on the case/coins. Crappy QC by the mint all around on this set...

I do not like the new cases. The reverse of all the coins seem to have a strange finish, but it's coming from the case.
That plastic inner sheet seems to be vacuformed. No way it can have the clarity of molded plastic. Also, I think it should be not so easy to open the case. I'd bet that these were the reasons why the sets were delayed so long. / Do you think this will affect the value of these sets?

The 2012 set didn't use this design. My fear is that they are going to adopt this design on all proof sets.
I started another tread specifically to get people to contact the mint about the new design. If enough of us contact them, they may listen. Who knows.

I am not as miffed about the case as the coin. Had all of it been the case, I would not send it back. But that one blemish sank it. Funny though. The crappy plastic of the case hid the blemish. Had it not been SO crappy I felt the need to open it, I may not have caught it.

Ok, my four sets arrived and, as expected, 3 of the 4 had marks "on" the coins. I removed the plastic top cover and voila! all the coins are perfect...I mean perfect. The circular marks are on the INSIDE where the coins must have rubbed on them at some point Wouldn't you think that the Mint would have addressed this upfront instead of sending out sets with the marked up plastic. Even inspecting and cleaning sets before shipping would have saved all the return grief. I can't imagine how many sets will be returned for nothing...like mine One thing I did find is that the plastic can be rotated so the marks are in the lower right corner and not over any coins....worked great. I probably will clean them up anyway but it makes me feel better seeing perfect coins.

Received my set yesterday and mine too has the blemishes on the case itself. The coins are fine, but the case leaves a whole lot to be desired. This set was not cheap, and I for one, expect the case to be as perfect as the coins. I went to the Mint website and left them feedback on it. Also, I'm new here, and find the site chock-full of good information! Thanks!
