Wish I read this thread before sending my set back yesterday. It appeared that the ASE and Half were badly scratched around the right side of the rim.

I got my final two sets today. One was flawless, the second had a slight scuff over the top of the ASE. I noticed that the scuff was permanent, so I rotated the cover and it wasn't over any of the coins and undetectable in front of the black background. Very nice set... I'm glad I got them.

Received my set sometime last week while I was traveling. Upon close examination, I don't see anything but minor scuffs on the cases, a dust speck on the Kennedy, and a possible piece of lint on the ASE. Interestingly, they included a little piece of paper that says "Thank you for purchasing the 2013 United States Mint Limited Edition Silver Proof Set. Should the packaging for your set show grey smudges on the sleeve or box, it can be wiped clean easily with a soft dry cloth or tissue. This is not a defect, and the product does not need to be returned for replacement in this condition". First I've seen of such an inclusion, so I'd guess they must be getting lots of returns. Good looking set overall. Clearly some packaging issues though.

When I first saw the mint offering the set I decided that I wasn't going to be purchasing the set because I thought "why purchase the set because I had all the coins in my collection already" so now I'm thinking that I still won't purchase the set. It may sound like sour grapes but then and now my funds were (are) limited so I'll be missing out on the opportunity altogether. At least I thought that had a valid reason.

I see the argument that the LE set is overpriced compared to the Silver Proof Set + Proof ASE as a little on the absurd side. That's not comparing similarly made products. The LE set is designed to be of high presentation quality unlike the others. You have to pay for that qualitative difference...it doesn't come for free. Besides, every collector product has significant premiums built in....the LE set is no different than any other collector product in that regard. If you want to get a US Mint silver product with the absolute lowest premium, just buy bullion ASE's and stay entirely away from the collector stuff. The 2012 or 2013 LE set will make for a much finer gift to a graduating or just married daughter or son than any other US Mint set without exception. That's where my set will be going.

I was afraid someone would ask I was one of the first to receive the sets and posted how there were marks on the ASE and Half....so I sent them back. Then I read how...just maybe...the marks could be on the INSIDE of the plastic case and just look like they are on the coins AND that the case easily opens... Well...sure enough the next sets I got (not the replacements) had the same marks on one of them ( ASE and half). I opened the sets and the coins were perfect...rotated the set in the case and the marks do not show The replacement sets have the same marks....

I should receive mine in a day or two. They were on backordered last week and then delayed because of my cc. I just updated them on Friday.

All mine had the scuffs. I did send one back for exchange because it had a brown spot.
I think the mint should send replacement lenses.

Any word on if they will resell the returned ones? If they cant resell them, the adjusted number will be much less than 50k. I actually picked mine up at the Phily mint store. I was able to inspect it before buying. Interesting enough, the 2013 LE set looked perfect, but the first 2014 ASE proof he brought out had a blemish on the case, so he got me another. The second was perfect.

A mint CSR told me that they replace the exchanges form a totally different stock, so I think they destroy the exchanges.

It's a shame that there have been these quality issues with the packaging! The product line has been introduced with all of the efficiency of the Deparment of Motor Vehicles (DMV) license renewal department. This is a beautiful set and the low numbers and number of returns will likely send a message to cancel the series. It also doesn't help that the LE issue is for 2013 and not the current year.
There is someone at the US Mint in charge of this product line that needs to be held accountable... they really botched this up.
