Maybe it's the picture, but I don't like the look of this coin. It looks porous and the lettering doesn't look right, especially the Sss. They seem much larger than the rest of the letters. IMO It's fake.

Thanks Echizento, I will avoid on your opinion.
Think I will stay off the silvers for now, I don't think on the whole that they have the same appeal to me for some reason, just seen this at a few pound and the price would have been too cheap to resist if genuine.

Thanks again

It definitely would help to have better pics with better lighting which isn't possible without having coin in hand but I wouldn't condemn this coin based on the lettering or style.

Here is a genuine example for comparison of a similar coin (different reverse legend break) for this type RIC 92

There is nothing from the images that would suggest that the coin is a fake. It does look to have been harshly (chemically) cleaned which has leeched out some of the base metal content from the coin. It is likely to be underweight and quite brittle but looks perfectly genuine.

I have seen 'gem' denarii of this period selling for around $30. I see nothing suspicious about this coin. But would not want to pay $30 either ! I am a cheapskate but I think a 20 would be the top I would pay. I am more fond of bronze anyway !

I would like to see inside the edge 'cracks' with the aid of a powerful loupe, before passing judgment.

The site 'Tesorillo' (with English translation) provides a good education on what to look for.

I agree that is is sometimes difficult to distinguish between a porous and a cast surface with the aid of picture only.

My first impression is that this piece is cast. The letters on the reverse seem to me, to be a bit too indistinct. Compare with genuine coin, picture courtesy Biancasdad.
