This is another enlightening thread. My reticulating activator is at it again!
I was at my LCD yesterday searching slabbed Morgans. Occasionally, I will pick up a gold or silver bullion piece so I was looking at those as well. When I find a slabbed coin I'm interested in, I always verify it with NGC or PCGS. I had never seen a China 1/4 oz slabbed before, so it caught my eye. When I looked it up on NGC Verify, I saw "Contact NGC Customer Service" next to the GRADE designation. This was new to me as well and I assumed something was off. I did not return to purchase the coin wanting to wait until I could investigate further.
When I started reading this thread yesterday, I saw the same coin (NGC Cert 3356524-140) referenced with photo by Yingyang. I have a very good relationship with the owner and have no doubt about his honesty. I believe this coin to be the true NGC specimen. What are the odds? I will bring this to his attention on the next day he's open to let him decide for himself. I just find it fascinating.
To be continued...

We have had presentations at the local coin club. Join, ask, and maybe someone will make a presentation, with real examples instead of pictures. One thing for very expensive coins is there is often one or several specific die marks, such as a filled in spot here or a small mark there. There are books that show these, especially for key date coins that are often replaced with less expensive coins without the specific marks. Knowledge is the key, and in coin collecting good books are a must.

These fakes always seem to generate bids. ebay Counterfeit 1875-S US Trade dollarA very typical example of a counterfeit US Trade dollar often seen on ebay. Mushy details and lack of proper denticles easily out many of these counterfeits.
