I am considering an 8TF VAM 14.1 that is indicated to be a VAM 14.1'A'. I notice neither PCGS or NGC list 14.1A at their site. VAMworld has a webpage for the VAM 14.1A, however, several of the photos there refer to the same characteristics as the 14.1, and I am unable to interpret a few of the photos (e.g., I cannot tell exactly where the close-up photo identifying "die gouges at hair Vee" has zoomed in). Does the VAM 14.1A truly exist? Thanks for any help. |

Slight update to my topic: I now realize where the "hair vee" is within the obverse, and I noticed that a photo at PCGS coinFacts of a VAM 14.1 has the "die gouges" that the VAMworld 14.1A photo refers to. |

The VAM 14.1A is the clashed "N" version of the 14.1. The dies clashed together without a planchet between the dies and some damage was done to the dies. Subsequent coins struck from the dies will show the signs of the clashing. nlp http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAM-14.1A |

Thanks nlp. Part of what was confusing me is that VAM-14.1 also shows several clash points, and I had not figured out what the 'clashed n' of the 14.1A specifically referred to. I re-read SuperDave's introductory topic ('What is a VAM'), and realized he included a photo of the 'clashed n'. The Vamworld VAM-14.1A webpage includes a photo of the 'clashed n', but I would never have been able to spot it in that photo. I took the liberty of re-posting that photo here with an identifying circle. I don't see the 'clashed n' in photos of the coin that I was told is a VAM 14.1A, and now believe it is a 14.1, which is of course still quite rare  . Thanks again. |

And remember, sometimes when a aubvariety is called out from an original VAM, people occasionally leave old images on the page for the original. VAMworld *is* a wiki, and a lot of people post edits there. |

Just resurrected my account to chime in here and elsewhere where I feel like it. Almost all coins from this die pair are VAM 14.1A, which is quite common. The VAM 14.1, which is unclashed, is quite rare. It tends to have a PL obverse. |
