I've been asked to find out what this is and how much it's possibly worth.
Not being my area, I wondered if anyone could give me an ID and possibly even a rough price estimate.

Thanks

Image on left looks like it "might" be a real coin while the image on right looks almost certainly (in my opinion) to be a reproduction. The pics do not look to be from the same 'object'....... the shapes of each side seem to be different.
Generally the rule with ancient coins tends to be if it does not look right ...... it probably isn't

Of course I should have added that it is 'supposed' to be a tetradrachm (or drachm) of Alexander the Great. These coins were issued over a wide area and were the standard for "good coinage" for a long time. Celtic imitations do exist but they have a distinctly 'Celtic' look about them.

IMO it doesn't look right. I'm seeing what look like casting bubbles on the reverse.

Thanks folks.
I did wonder about the obverse, being that it has extensive dark 'patina',
made me wonder whether it came from a piece of jewellery.

I took some better pictures. (Next to a 5p piece [dime] )

The possibility that it had been set as jewelry piece would explain the differences in 'shape'.
The reverse has been filed to make it a good fit into some sort setting.
It could be a real drachm although the portrait is much more detailed on the lion skin than I am accustomed to seeing and I remain sceptical. But these are not really my strong area. Best possible assessment I see is someone took a real beauty of an Alexander and "schmucked" it up good with a file ...... making it worth around 80% less than what it might have been.
Worst case is they used a better quality fake to do same.
Not too many decades ago dealers at large International Shows would have bowls full of VF/EF Alexander drachms priced at $40 a pop ! Prices have gone up considerably ...... unless of course someone took a file to it !
