Interesting Ancient Chinese Spade Charm For ID #4

The collection these were from were put together around 1910, and most have old tags attached. I've one a thread for each of them on the ID forum. I've got a fair idea on most of them, but could do with some help on the exact type for some. Any info would be much appreciated! Sap Moderator Australia 16876 Posts	Posted 04/04/2014 9:36 pm Items like this are more "replicas" or "copies", rather than charms, since they replicate the inscriptions on original coins. In this case, the original is a 2 jin spade from the Liang (Wei) state, 400-300 BC, listed in Hartill as number 3.48. Scholars still debate about exactly how best to translate the archaic inscriptions on these spades. Here's a genuine one on zeno.ru to compare it with. Note particularly the corners and edges which are both sharper and less well-defined than on your piece. A "jin" weighed around 14 grams, so a two-jin spade should weigh about 28 grams. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff
