I would think twice (maybe three) times before spending the extra cash and sending your coins for the graded Kennedy labels. It will be a big expense especially for the half which is a $5 coin.

...and there are 7 coins planned to be sold

WOW. I checked the $9.95 Kennedy clad set this evening on the Mint's website and it is now saying the set is back-ordered till September 6, 2014.

Well that means they have well oversold the 37,000 sets they had on hand in about 12 hours.

Yay! And they will make enough to satisfy collectors. This is a good move by the Mint. Foxwoods is right. I wouldn't spend the extra cash just to get these graded. This is definitely a case where you are paying big money for a piece of paper and plastic holder. OGP for me this time.

Don't get me wrong, the NGC label/slab is awesome in its presentation. They have simply gone overboard with the pricing.

With 68,974 sold on the opening day... I would guess you won't need to send yours in to get graded - you'll find low cost graded sets readily available. This is another poorly planned offering that is going to flood the market with a waste of coins.

Did anybody really think this was going to end up as a rare and valuable collector item? The Mint priced them at $10 so that it could be a common and widely available piece to honor the history of the coin and President.

Rest in Peace

How do you figure it is poorly planned? The mint planned it very well so that everyone who wants one of these sets will be able to get one, though some people will have to wait a few weeks to get theirs. Do you really mean " They should have planned it so I could get a bunch quickly and cheap but everyone else who wants them should have to buy them from me and others at a huge markup so I can make some free money off of the mint?" Or " They should only make a few so that after I get mine, every one else is out of luck, and mine will go up a lot in value?" The mint is there for ALL citizens to be able to get coins, even special offerings. Why is it bad for everyone who wants one to get one?

This! Very well said. It just boggles my mind that some people consider a "minted to demand" product a failure because said product will not produce a "valuable" coin for others to have to fight for on the secondary market. The US Mint planned this perfectly well. I guess there will always be those who are irritated because they aren't able to make a quick buck off the Mint. The US Mint should produce everything to demand as far as I'm concerned.

I called NGC to ask about the first strike label and I guess I have to do more home work prior to submitting for this.

My fault, but I didn't know that in order to get this you have to submit them on the 28th. Mine are not even due to ship till that date.

The Rep DID tell me that I CAN get the label BUT I would have to Drive to Philly or Denver, (from Florida), and then race back, go to Sarasota, (2 hours from me), and submit them.

Not a Big Help.

Oh Well.

Well said. The Mint is in business to sell collector products, not to make an accidental rarity or to P/O legions of collectors that can't get their hands on the latest coin to add to their sets. Getting around the Mint to demand mintage now involves getting in door first and flipping it immediately to those who are unwary, uninformed or impatient. The rest of us are willing to wait for our sets. The initial batch of gold coins (40,000) might last longer than 12 hours than the 37,000 on hand of the clad set yesterday. A no brainer on $10/set vs. $1,275.00 for a single coin. It presages the demand for the four-coin silver set will see similar or greater demand.

ANA announces safety procedures
for U.S. Mint purchases at the 2014 World's Fair of Money

The American Numismatic Association today announces the following public-safety procedures for collectors who wish to buy the dual-dated 50th anniversary Kennedy gold proof coins that will go on sale at the Chicago World's Fair of MoneySM, to be held in Rosemont, Illinois, on Aug. 5-9.

The U.S. Mint previously announced that 500 Kennedy coins per day will be sold at the show, and in order to purchase a coin, a buyer must receive a ticket from the U.S. Mint. The line for receiving tickets will form outside of the bourse floor at 8 a.m. each day of the show. There will be signs on site to guide collectors to the correct area. Mint officials will distribute tickets to the first 250 people in line between 10:30 and 10:45 a.m. each day. At 11 a.m., collectors with tickets will be led onto the bourse floor through a special side entrance that will take them directly to the U.S. Mint booth to complete their purchase.

Collectors are reminded that proper credentialing is required to enter the convention hall at the World's Fair of Money. Collectors who are not credentialed will be asked to leave the ticket line. The public registration desk will open Tuesday through Saturday, Aug. 5-9, starting at 8 a.m. Registration is required to receive credentials. ANA members who registered for the show online before the July 15 pre-registration deadline will receive their credentials via U.S. mail before the show.

The U.S. Mint previously announced that collectors under the age of 18 will not be allowed to purchase the Kennedy coins on site at the show. Collectors will not be allowed to hold spots in line for others.

Daily public admission is $6 for non-members and free for ANA members. A $2 off coupon is available for free at WorldsFairOfMoney.com.

The World's Fair of Money is the nation's premier money show, featuring the most expansive educational programs and best numismatic inventory of any summer show. The show features more than 1,100 numismatic dealers; major auctions by Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries; the ANA's signature Museum Showcase, exhibiting some of the world's most valuable and beautiful coins and paper money; the Collector Exhibits area; as well as educational presentations and seminars. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Aug. 5-8, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. For more information, go to WorldsFairofMoney.com.

The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging people to study and collect money and related items. The ANA helps its 25,500 members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of education and outreach programs, as well as its museum, library, publications, conventions and seminars. Dar I do have a question that I've been struggling with for many years. You mentioned a NGC first strike label and how ridiculous the hoops that you will have to jump through to get (which I agree with) but I really don't understand the concept of graded modern coins. While I did just purchase some (which I probably won't do again) I do fail to see the interest in a graded modern coin.

There are probably a whole host of individuals who are sitting on uncirculated coins that could be classified in the high MS series. So if all these individuals decided to submit their coins then the value of the previous graded coins will be driven down by the new influx.

I did order my five sets of these coins for a couple of reasons. First and foremost to ensure that I will still have chance at a full set. Secondly, so that if this set should take off (doubt it) I'll have something in which to participate in the upsurge. Finally, the possibility that I will have interesting trading material.

It's going to be an interesting ride with these and future Kennedy releases. A few years ago we had the multiple releases of the Lincoln Memorials, then there was the silver eagles, now we have the influx of the Kennedy. Which series will be the next participant of multiple release?

We as collectors are basically force to join in on the hoopla or we will not have a complete set. The other thing is that this is added revenue for the mint as the coins are not meant for circulation. I would not think that these coins will not somehow show up in circulation some day. If so, I do hope that I am lucky enough to get them.

Ghost,

I have to say I Agree with everything you stated AND I got my 5 Sets for the same reasons.

I just thought it might be nice to at least check into the 'First Strike' thing because it 'seems' to be the only thing people Talk about.( Not All people but, you know), "Perfect" coins?, MS/PF in PLASTIC?!?!

I'm new to collecting so I guess I don't fully understand.

My views might change some day but...
