Foxwoods, that will come back. Regardless of the current valley, the price of gold is well above what it was ten years ago. And ten years from now it will be well above its value now. I meant that in the long run.

I do buy PM's (mostly silver though) when they get to levels I see as depressed. I'm kind of a contrarian in ALL my investments so I added more PM's last year.
Just because an investment tool is higher than it was 10 years ago doesn't mean it will be even higher 10 years from now. PM's and NASDAQ equities are perfect examples with both SIGNIFICANTLY lower than years ago. Will PM's come back? Maybe....but it is DEFINITELY not guaranteed.
In October 2012 gold was around $1800/oz...10 years prior it was $300/oz...nice...if you bought in 2002...but if you bought 10/2012, expecting the future to be based on the past, you would have lost $500/oz over those 2 years. Significant considering what other investment tools have done over the same time period.
I wouldn't discourage buying PM's (obviously) but I don't like when something is guaranteed based on an opinion.

Quote: If I can scrape the money together, this WILL be my first gold coin purchase. I am really thinking about getting the gold coin, it will be my first gold coin, but I am a big Kennedy half dollar fan.... wait maybe I will need two, oh shoot I am losing my mind... $2400.00 is a lot of money on my end... if I sell my baseball card collection that will give me $30.00 if I am lucky they seem worthless..then I just need $2370.00.. What to do....

Quote: "15-30 minute announcement"---prior to sales, and, where to line up(to prevent LONG LINES)...WHERE to form a line...from speakers on Bourse floor....can you IMAGINE the stampede? Need 6 people..1 in each corner, to scramble to the area.. Another thing that will make it interesting. Have you ever tried to actually understand the announcements they make over the PA system there? I've been to two ANAs in the Convention Hall and I could never understand a thing they said.

Ok..here goes...some may shun me, others will back me up I am handicapped, on perm. disability due to crippling arthritis, among other health issues....while not in a wheelchair, I have limited mobility,(I'm about to get a new hip replacement) and, live in a world of chronic pain, but, live my days the best I can, without complaint, and, full of gratitiude...so many are in much worse positions than myself. That said...if I was at the Convention...then, the annoucement made where to line up for my ticket...how in God's name would I run...I cannot run...I hobble with a cane... This is sheer madness...the scramble after announcement will be insane..possibly dangerous..people may trip, and fall in the rush...I am stunned this is how this will be handled, and, bottom line, the young and the strong will get their tickets long before us slower ones have a chance...can I pull the A.D.A. card here? Since the Mint is a Government agency, it is probable there is a confict with "reasonable" access to those with disabilities. I realize by posting this, I will create some conflict...all I ask is you keep and open mind, and, put yourself in our shoes... I will tell you...I believe Veterans first(I'm NOT a Vet), for these situations...they deserve it, after risking their lives for our freedom...disabled perhaps also....the big dealers who PAY people to get tickets slants this event totally in their favor..that's the way things are now. My SOLUTION is better planning. IF you wanted to go to the Antiques Roadshow, you fill out a form online, and, wait to see if you are a winner in a lottery...3,000 people get tickets via a lottery..you CANNOT purchase tickets ahead of time. This seems the only fair way to level the playing field for the general public, vs. the big dealers with hundreds hired to get the first day coins/label.... Will I go "public" with this...I am not sure...it is somewhat done now, in this thread. I am not the only coin collector-hobbyist that is disabled. I am shocked the ANA and the Convention Center Insurance agency has OK'd this mad ticket idea....... There HAS to be a better way that allows for safe and reasonable access to all involved. I suggest the higher ups involved come up with something else...fast. Calvin G.

Yes, I got mine yesterday. @ilikeikes indeed better planning by the US Mint to take the scenario you describe into consideration. It is stupid for the Mint to only take 2,500 coins with them to the ANA show--with all the hype they've been building for the past several months, they know it is going to be a popular item. Why don't they take 10,000 to the ANA and limit it to 1 per person. This would ensure a broader distribution. 10,000 for the ANA show 10,000 for the Philadelphia Mint gift shop 10,000 for the Denver Mint gift shop 10,000 to the fulfillment center so orders can be shipped quickly The Mint doesn't use common sense and a madhouse ensues. Just my Two Cents worth. -MV

Good solution Meadow! Since there is no mintage limit, the energy will be 99% in the "Chicago Label"(selling pre-sale on ebay today for 3200 on up)...more than the coin itself, no? Secondary energy will be First Strike coinage. BIG mistake not limiting to 50k, like baseball..but, it's all about SALES....

I'm glad that the minting will be to demand. This will give everyone a chance to get one at a more reasonable price if they decide to include it in their sets. This will benefit collectors more than investors/sellers, which is always good in my book.

All right, I was just looking at the description of the "50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Uncirculated Coin Set (K14)" on the Mint website. At the very bottom of the description is the following: Quote: Note: All other United States Mint 2014 Kennedy half-dollars that are not included in the K13 and K14 sets share the common reverse described above, while the obverse features a strong but simple portrait of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy and the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. I'm assuming this means that the "regular" uncirculated 2014 Kennedy half-dollars that are currently available by the roll with have the standard "strong but simple portrait" of JFK on the front, whereas the special two-coin set will have the original version of the portrait instead. I guess I might have to buy one or two of these after all...

I just picked up one of the clad sets since I needed to order my 2014 mint set anyway.
