How likely would it be to find one of these in the 90% junk silver box at the LCS? I would love to find one for my mercury set!

There's plenty of Mercury at my LCS in the scrap silver bin. I found a 1926-D in AU last month. Usually they're VF's though and you'll find mostly the 30's and 40's in there.

Finding a 1942/1 Mercury dime is extremely unlikely though. It's the most sought out Mercury dime Variety. It'd take a very stupid, inexperienced and ignorant dealer to let one through. We've had a case of a 1916-D Lowball that was let through on CCF before though.

But again, it's an extremely rare case.

But, you never know.

I did cherry a 1942/1D from junk silver.

I showed it to a couple of dealers who all told me "nope, that ain't it".

Now it is in an NGC XF-45 holder.

It would definitely be a huge find. I just went through 20,000 silver dimes (mostly mercs) and set aside all of the 42 Ps $ Ds and didn't find any. But I would check anyway, you never know!

The "D" overdate is not nearly as obvious as the "P" Mint one.
But a reasonable dealer should recognize one.
