I hae been offered this Gold Aureus for $1250. It is supposed to be VF and it is 17 mm. What do you think? It is about $1150 more than I would usually pay. Sorry about the photos but they are the sellers.

Stamped WRL. It is 100% fake.
Edit:I should elaborate a bit. WRL stands for Westair Reproductions Limited

Even if it wasn't stamped WRL this looks 100% fake.

The seller should be informed of the obviousness of that one.

If so he got ripped off. I doubt that's where he got it.

He is a LIAR..
This 'coin' was not even a fake, made with the intention deceive. That's why 'WRL' is stamped on it. It would be best termed as a 'copy'. It is gold plated with a base metal core. I have a similar gold plated 'WRL' aureus copy.
CNG is short for Classical Numismatic Group. They took over the business of BA Seaby Ltd, and traded under the name of Seaby Coins. Later on, they became the CNG. CNG is one of the World's most respected names in the trading of ancient coins. There NO WAY that such an obvoius copy woud have been sold as a genuine aureus by CNG.
And that's why he is a liar. He certainly didn't buy it from CNG!

O.K. I have referred all information to the seller who has indicated that he is as surprised as I am. (I am learning quickly.) He claims that his 'experience' is with Silver coins and not Gold coins. (?)
No, I will not be contemplating the purchase of this coin.
Yes I have purchased some coins from him recently (yet to arrive) for my own collection. He has assured me that they are genuine 'ancient' coins, and when they do arrive I will put them up for comment as to authenticity.
I know about buying from 'respected' sellers, but sometimes they don't have the coins that you are looking for, or sometimes coins come up from 'other' sellers. My checks on this seller are all good and (as yet) I don't have any reason to doubt them, save for him offering one, (at this point), coin that is not genuine. Should any of the ones I bought turn out to be less than 'described', I will then experience his 'Refund Policy'. Until then . . . . .
Let me thank you (all) for your (timely) responses and help.
(I am not alone.)

I would advise you to post every coin you are buying, you dont have any experience yet and it will prevent you of buying fakes or making bad deals. I've learned a lot last year and the people here helped me a lot!

Seriously ! I do not know if it is gold plated but it definitely looks like there is chocolate on the inside ! The local Dollar Store has better looking 'gold coins' and you can eat them too

Have a look at the VCOINS site. Type 'aureus' into your search. About 70 of them will show up, ranging from around $3,000 to around $9,000 in price. Quite a golden education!
