So I was going through a few rolls of quarters and came across this puppy. I had originally threw it aside thinking it was a US quarter until I actually focused on it and realize it wasn't. It has a copper looking ring going right around on both the obverse and reverse, it looks very similar to the edge of a US quarter. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? Is this a mint error or something that happened after? The coin is in very good condition for something that has been in circulation for 6 years. Also I did try to clean a small section with some hot water and a micro fiber cloth to eliminate the possibility of it just being marker or something on the coin.
Someone sanded off the outer nickel plating, or something else to remove it. White coins are made with a three-layer process: nickel is layered first, followed by copper and then another layer of nickel.
