Hard to believe the original hoarder couldn't have even saved one nice coin. He must have cleaned each one before putting it in the jar!

Amother thing that occurs to me - gotten stuck with fakes or really badly impaired coins? Well, just stick them in the middle as filler. Then you can plausibly throw up your hands after the fact and say, "How was I supposed to know?"

It's interesting, in the last sale shown, the pearl jewelery is costume, and the piece with diamonds on them is also custom.

The seller states that in prior such sales, buyers have found an additional gold coin within. I'm betting that'll happen again, and it won't be a matter of chance. If I'm right in my presumption, it's a smooth move by the seller when these lots are being bid up to so much more than actual value.

Clever marketing - but how long before you run out of buyers, or risk reputation

I dont now the value of all these coins, but I would bet that as long as the real value is within 20% of the paid value, no one will complain

I gave a total value for all of them on the last page or two, the total was $2500. At the time the bid was $2000 so I though, "Hey, that's not all that bad."

But NOW, it's at $6207!!!!! with over 80 bids!

Wow!

$6608.99

I'm in the wrong business.
All I would have to do to get started is throw all my morals out the window.

Remember that folks here were thinking there was about $2,500 to $3,000 in actual value to this lot. As I said a few posts erlier, the seller can certainly now afford to sneak in a little something extra for the buyer to find.

Moving on to the similar auctions Susuman identified on page 4:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Old-Jar-of-...a&rmvSB=true

Up to $179.49 (16 bids) with 3½ days to go.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/JAR-FULL-OF...c&rmvSB=true

This one's now at $620 (57 bids) with 6½ days to go.

Again, if anyone would care to estimate actual value based upon what's visible/disclosed on either of these....
