Luster seems obviously diminished in the fields; I'd say AU-55 based on these photos. There are a few minor marks but nothing that would suggest damage or harsh cleaning.

I'd agree with AU-55.

Very clean fields for a circulated gold piece.

Nice!

Frankly, I think the first person who received it in payment took it out of circulation immediately. There are dings and wipes (lower reverse rim) which came from a circulation environment but I see no wear on the obverse. If it circulated, it wasn't for long. Wouldn't be surprised if I saw no wear at all in-hand.

I compared it to these PCGS and NGC slabs, and mine has better details. It looks like it is at least an UNC.

The 1842 Liberty Quarter Eagle below is an NGC AU58.

The 1850 Liberty Quarter Eagle below is a PCGS MS62.

The 1844 Liberty Quarter Eagle below is an NGC MS63.

....so you're seeing the problem. In most cases, slight circulation is all but impossible to be sure of in images. The NGC 58 is overgraded; it's 55 and that's typical of NGC.

SSDave I took a look at the stats for the 1842 Quarter Eagle, it's low mintage and tough in grades above XF according to Akers write up shown on PCGS CoinFacts. If I had to guess, I'd say NGC went easier on it for that reason. I agree it's overgraded.

Looks AU+ with an excellent strike and probably a light cleaning that appears market acceptable for problem-free. I agree with AU55.

AU50/55 .... There is way too much "chatter" for an "unc" grade on this coin. The mint luster is also impaired.
