I'm willing to bet they've been answered before.

1: How much would a good detector generally cost?

2: I'm guessing there's a very wide range of prices. What features and benefits to you get at the high range, vs med, vs low?

3: What areas are generally good for detecting if you're looking for numismatics? Beaches? Parks? Are there any MUST detect sites if you get an opportunity?

4: How do I stop my wife from calling me a nerd if I start detecting (like she threatened to do)?

1.
Low end machines cost anything from $30 to $100
A good entry level machine from an good manufacturer will cast between $150 and $250 (Garrett, Whites etc)
2.
Elementary schools give me the fastest coin return for my time Parks do better for Jewelry. Beaches are a bust for me some one always gets there first.
3.
My Wife started as as a detector moll, now she has her own machine and regularly finds more than me. (Tell her its good exercise and the hobby will eventually produce a return on the investment and you may even find her a diamond tiara.)

The higher range models normally offer better discrimination & depth. This 'may' obviously increase your finds whilst decreasing your time spent digging up ring pulls & such. If you're new to MD'ing then I'd suggest not aiming for a top of the range model but to start with a more moderate entry level machine as has been previously suggested. Get to know your detector, it's limitations & interpret what finds produce what signals/sounds.
Parks, beaches & gardens are good for finds but maybe you wanna be a bit more adventurous by searching out older sites through your library or local history associations. There's tonnes of stuff in the ground just waiting to be found & if you do a bit of homework on where to look you'll possibly end up with more finds. Good luck.

I like that, a nerd. well I guess they can think it or even call it. but when you hear the beep, dig the hole and see some old silver or copper, it doesn't matter to me what you call me. been at it 12 yrs. lots of additions to my coin collection in that time. $1000 invested, priceless to the enjoyment. it doesn't hurt that the wife has a 14k 3 diamond ring on her finger from this yrs beach trip. enjoy it

I am still relatively new to metal detecting, my wife actual bought me the detector for Christmas a couple years ago. That does not stop her from calling me a Geek. I call it Geek Appeal.

I have tried parks several times, but I find I am digging up hundreds of old beer pull-tabs more than anything else. No coins, the old timers must have been too busy buying beer with their coins to drop a couple.

I plan on trying the beaches near my home soon, since the metal detecting season just started. (They have rules about MD during the swimming months).

One word of advice. To avoid further name calling from your wife, Do Not and I mean Do Not come running into the house in uncontrollable excitement because you made your first find of a 1986 penny in your back yard. I am still trying to live that one down.
