Just disable the flash. This is a dSLR - you guys just spent the money to have infinite adjustability, which is what it takes to shoot the good stuff. No flash, Spot metering, Aperture Priority on the dial and f/8. For the moment. The first thing is to refine setup and lighting for consistency. Then we start playing with the really fun stuff.
But first and foremost, become familiar with the terms I'm using. This isn't possible otherwise. Even if this process is easy for you, there is a college semester worth of things you need to learn. Takes commitment.

hello crosseyed well I have purchased 3 of the jansjo lamps . today we started to build the solid mount for the camera. I designed it and it should be done next week. we are going to try a special paint that was purchased for a nuclear plant. my friend build panels for electrical connection for them. he has a lot of this paint left over. I am going to build a plywood compartment. to mount the camera mount in. it will all be painted with this paint. well see what kind of effect it has on these pictures hopefully in a couple of weeks have a great one

If the pics are dark, lighten them. Slow the exposure a bit. That's what all this equipment is for. I'm not a fan of enclosed boxes for cameras - too constricting. There are occasions when you may want lighting some distance from the subject. I've had Jansjos straight out sideways at coin level to highlight die cracks. This paint is completely nonreflective, right? Gloss paint is as good as lining the area with mirrors.

I looked into the jansjo lights and the nearest store is about 2-3 hours away.So I guess the next time I go see My sister I'll have to stop by there and go shopping. You'll have to put up some pictures of the rig,and lighting, when You get it done, for sure.I bought a used copy stand and it works soo much better than the other tri-pod I was using.

It should be emphasized, though, that the stand is highly optional in this setup. You can accomplish the task with anything from a $20 Best Buy tripod on up to custom-built microscope stand mods. The same goes for lighting. Yes, we get very picky about lighting here. But the equipment you guys are buying is capable of delivering flawless results with a single 75w incandescent in a small table lamp. Check out Mark Goodman's work. He's as good at this as anyone alive, and he earned that reputation shooting mostly with that single bulb. The price you're paying in equipment and learning is rewarded with enormous flexibility. That is the big advantage over the point-and-shoots and iPhones. They have to find their sweet spot. Your sweet spot is a whole field - your equipment doesn't need anything resembling perfection. Your learning goal is to leverage that. You've arrived when you stop caring what you're using for lighting.

I checked out Mark Goodmans site...and all I can say is WoW!Those are some Real Nice Coins, and the pictures are fantastic. I hope rocky doesn't mind Me asking, and I don't want to derail His thread,or take it in a direction He doesn't want...But,I'm going to assume that they were taken with a beam-splitter glass? And this might be the direction we are being nudged too?

hello crosseyed. I got the new jansjo lights doesnot make a bit of differents for myself. I am going to try so more with the canon. if I cant get it to work. I will take it back. there is a camcorder a level above the one I have now. you can connect all the same lens and attachment as the canon camera. maybe I better stick with what I know. also you can connect directly to the monitor with and hdmi cable. so one can check coins with that. that's what I want to do . it makes it easyier to see the coins. well I will try so more. I worked with a pilot his wife is a professional photographer. before I change anything else I will see her and ask her to try to show me what I am doing wrong. them I will make my decision. the camcorder is 5 times the cost of a canon t5 have a great one
