Hi Guys,
I just acquired this today and was hoping to find a little info about it and a possible value.
What I was told is that the obverse is common for the year but the reverse is not as common.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Nice medal. I have doubts about date in reverse: VII KAL(ENDAS)IVN I think it must be A(NTE).D(IEM). VII KAL IVN or may 26 in our calendar (romans said "day seven before june 1"

So date must be 26, may 1839, this day Gregorius XVI canonized a lot of saints. Phrase MIRABILIS DEUS IN SANCYIS SUIS (God is wonderful in his saints) may be referreed to this act.

Interesting, so to be clear, are you saying it may be dated wrong?

No. I am not expert in roman calendar; but probably in 19th century was usual to omit A. D. because there is no chance: KALENDA IVN is June 1; and VII KALENDAS IVN mus be -ever- seven days before this date, may 26 (then they can omit ANTE DIEM = BEFORE DAY...).

Year is M·DCCC·XXXVIIII 1839 (they use four I, as in many coins, for example CAROLUS IIII; more correct would be MDCCCXXXIX).

Not al all. They are curious ( those romans systems for date and numbers).

About the medalist, may be Giuseppe Girometti (1780-1851) or his son Pietro Girometti (1812-1859), both medalists and gems sculptors in the Papal court and mint (the second is reputed as one of the better madalists )

They signed theirs works as G.GIROMETTI.F and P.GIROMETTI.F; I think the first letter is worn out; father was 59 years old and son 27 in 1839, so your medal may be a work of any of them.

Here's a link to an Italian numismatic site that refers to the Anno IX medal of Gregory XVI. If you have other papal medals there is lots of information available on the site with a bit of searching.

http://numismatica-italiana.lamonet.../1?mylang=en

Note: The years of a Pope's reign do not coincide neatly with calendar years so the site lists medals both ways.
