Went to several banks yesterday including ones I didn't have an account. All had at least a few halves and readily and eagerly gave them to me. Total was 79.50. Now for the interesting part. I don't take my halves back to the bank- I spend them. $60 of the halves I got were my own halves (came from a bank I never visited before and didn't have an account). I already had gone through these very same coins about 4 weeks ago. I could tell because I remembered the corrosion on some of them and remembered the date spread. So the halves I spent filtered their way back to the bank. It looks like I need to find a new bank.
So, not counting the $60, I had $19.50 to go through. Found 3 40% silver and 1 90% silver.
Totals for 2008: $1953 searched 40%: 66 90%: 3 (1 was doubled lettering on Reverse) Walkers/Franklins: 0 NITC: 0 Silver clad PF: 1 (1976S) Silver PF: 1 (1976S)

After finding the 3 walkers, I am tempted to go and get another $500 worth but at my own bank

Somebody, please enlighten me... Been through $1000 halves and notta silver in sight. Found 3 coins newer then 02 and like 8 BU coins and thats it... Before you say, $1000 isn't much and you should keep searching, I dont think searching halves is for me whatsoever. If I see another bi-centenial, I'm going to throw up. I dont get how someone can search $20 worth and find like 3-4 silver... So I dont know where my boxes come from, but what gives? I'd honestly much rather pull out my eyelids out one by one I think. I'm easily disappointed if you cant tell :( I mean, I'm not out for tons and tons of silver to get rich, I'm after coins for my book and maybe even like 1-2 coins per box. If I even found silver at that rate, I would be satisfied. I dunno, I tried it...its not my thing I guess...

well try searching through rolls of 1933 double eagles, if you dont have any luck there then perhaps your cursed try a different bank, especially one with a coin machine as older folks sometimes dump stuff in whithout knowing the value of what they just put into the machine

ceaton, Try going to some banks that are on the edge of large residential areas verses ones right in a business district. I'm just going on a theory here. I'm thinking that banks nearer to residences might be prone to receive more coins that have been hand rolled and brought in by individuals. Some banks don't mess with halves at all unless someone has just brought them in. In this case you could be buying halves that someone else has searched and dumped or they could be some that someone has just rolled up from their 5 gallon water jug of coins and cashed them in. There are only two banks in my area where I've found silver. One is a very busy bank that's right on the edge of a middle class res. area. The other is a very unusual and very old bank that uses halves on a daily basis. This old bank has an antique change machine that holds half dollars. The teller told me this old cash machine is over 100 years old! The only problem with this bank is they want their halves brought back to them when I'm done searching them! I'm holding out until I have enough half dollars to go and trade them even for all they have. After that I guess I'd be done with that bank until they ran low and had to order more. Anyway, I'm just suggesting to try some different banks and go for the customer wrapped rolls if you can find them. I know every area is probably different. Maybe you could try the next small town over or something? I know it may be that I'm able to sound positive because I found some 40%ers my first time out. In my first $360 of halves I found 10 40%ers and 1 1976S clad proof . But in my subsequent $450 I've found nothing . But I'm not going to give up until I've played it out a bit more. I've never ordered a bank box yet and I'm not sure if I'll ever get to. But I will if I'm ever at a point that I can afford to tie up the $500 for a couple of days. Those are some of my thoughts and suggestions. I'm sure others may have some additional and even better suggestions here. May the silver flow in your direction for awhile now!

Thanks Numi. The bank I get my boxes is Wells Fargo and they are in the middle of the suburbs. My teller says she makes everyone go through the coin machine and doesn't accept customer wrapped rolls. Also, her dad is a collector, so anything she see's she snags for her dad :( I've been buying boxes from the Fed it seems...dont think I can get any customer wraps ;(

Don't give up hope yet ceaton. My first $1000 in Fed wrapped were skunks, much like yours. Since I'm close to Dallas, and other half hunters from the Dallas area are reporting the same dryness, it is clear in this region of the country that Fed wrapped halves are dry for silver. However, other areas of the country seem to be reporting silver in Fed wrapped halves. My bank won't get them from anywhere else, so Fed boxes are not for me.
My personal preference, which had been all my half searching for years, until this recent $1000 in Fed-wrapped, is customer -rapped rolls. Some of them will be dry- could have been searched or maybe just didn't have any silver; however, some will have silver and the % are sometimes really nice. I continue to have great success overall with customer-wrapped or loose in the tellers' drawer. I've obtained many proofs over the years, have gotten 5 87 P or D, and hundreds of 40% or 90% silver and a few Franklins and Walkers. Just a few weeks ago, I had one of my best finds ever- two solid rolls of AU/BU 40% halves from a small batch.
Don't give up. I hit my same branches about once a month and they usually have a few halves, sometimes have a few rolls, sometimes none at all. Twice over the last month, I've gotten from several banks under $20 face and landed a 90% silver piece and in one of those cases, also got two silver proofs.
I think there are still a lot of people out there with halves in their houses and they do cash them in from time to time. And that means that the 40% and 90% silver that people have will continue to make their way to the bank.

Mycrob,
The information you shared is, I'm sure, motivating to all of us. I know it will help me to keep at it.
When you ask for loose halves in the tellers drawer what's your approach? Do you ask the teller to check everyones drawers or do just take what you get from the teller you're dealing with at the time?
I know on occasion when I've asked for rolls the teller has simply replied 'we don't have any'. In some cases I might have never known that the next teller down had some if she/he hadn't overheard me and said she had some. On other occaisions I have simply gone to the next teller to ask and end up finding a few rolls.
I've never asked for the loose halves in teller drawers but I think I'm going to start. I guess even if the teller happens to be watching out for silver themselves they just might be overlooking copper/nickel clad proofs. Sounds like a good plan to me.

I cannot get customer wrapped rolls. My teller A: Makes customers unwrap them and use the coin counter. B: If they are loose coins in the tray, her dad collects and she keeps silver for him...I'd really hate to find another bank. I just got my teller sweetened up and she knows who I am when I walk in and has coins ready for me. I'll try a few more boxes, if I continue to get skunked, i'll check my other options.

Living in the same area, I agree with Mycrob's comments. There have been times that I have searched through a thousand dollars and only found two 40 percent silver halves. The best bet seems to be the customer wrapped halves, or the loose halves.
Most of the time the tellers are happy to give them to you. I always ask them to check around the bank. They always seem happy to do this. My search today actually yielded 16 silver clads and 3 90 percent halves. All were loose and all were from the same bank
Interestingly I wound up with 19 Ikes. The younger tellers don't always seem to know the differnce between the 50 cent pieces and the big dollars. Who knows, maybe there are some real silver dollars out there too!

kj, What a great score on the silver! Especially out of just 16 Rolls! Good for you and it's motivating to the rest of us ! I'm still quite new at all this myself and I am learing as I go. It's nice to know that my suggestions where helpful. I am IMPATIENTLY waiting for my funds to come in a few days from now. I am fidgitting in anticipation until I have some cash to go 'buy' some rolls of halves. The waiting has given me time to lay out my strategy as to the order in which I'm going to attack (I mean visit) my banks . Yeah, once you've been bitten ther's no going back ! ceaton, Sounds like you might be in a tough area. Guess you could always wait until you visit frieds or family in another town. I haven't run into the situation of being required to unroll the coins before turning them in yet, fortunately. I suppose I can see the reason for it though. I know there are some very dishonest folks out there that would try to fill the rolls with anything other than half dollars. So I guess you can't blame the banks for their precautions. If you want to keep trying then you have the fed boxes, maybe loose halves in the teller drawers at other banks, etc. One other option you could try, that I've been thinking of exploring, is to try asking at some large grocery stores. I'm sure it would be hit or miss but I'm also sure that from time to time someone would bring in some rolls of halves to buy groceries (maybe?). Hope this helps. Good job to you also lucky13! Hope I can find some Bens or Walkers some day.

I talked to two banks this week and have totol of 6 boxes ordered . One bank is sending Loomis fedboxs I think. I dont know. My last 12 boxes come from loomis. Two boxs coming here. Secord bank I never bought them before. I geting 4 boxs from Brinks. Thats there cash services. I never bought brinks half dollars before. I will see whats in those boxs? Brinks penny boxs I hate compared to loomis or cwi fedboxs. Its looks long hard job going thru 6000 coins and tossing into my dump bank . I hope my bank dont freek out when unload them into there machices next week. Ceaton, Please dont give up and keep trying my first 7 boxs were nothing intill Loomis sent 3 fedboxs on silver stuff I found. Your talking about geting sick of 1976 coins. I am geting sick of looking at 2000 denver and philly rolls. My last 1000 boxs had over 80 to 100 bucks face on 2000 coins. I am tired of looking at 2000 coins like you and 1976 coins. Those pallets at trucking company or coin depots are full of new boxs or junk boxs. You need buy more before they send the boxs that are older that were turned in years ago I learned. Like I said my first boxs were wraped in 2007 since I found an 2007 proof coin. But after I cleaned the coin depot out on the first 7 boxs they started sending me the old boxs they wraped serval years before. Loomis is sending me old fedboxs becides there Hand wraped junk boxs like the first 7 I bought from them. I forced Loomis to start picking up boxs at federal banks becides sending me there junk hand wraped boxs with no silver. You cant just turn an profit trying pull silver I learned. Last monlth I built an totol of 5 complete sets from 1964 thru 2001 minus 1970d and 1987 for ebay to turn an profit to help get my gas money back I spent of hauling halfs from banks. I already started building sets 6 and 7 this monlth. My goal is to build 20 folders totol where I get an beter deals on buying solid date rolls from 2002 thru 2008, 1987 1970d. I dont know yet ? Since silver is hard sometimes that the reason I built those sets to make an small profit to get my gas money back I spent driving around buying halfs from banks. I will build an set and make like 35 dollars profit to refill my gas tank since gasoline is very expensive. Its no worth it unless I can make few dollars to refill my tank again. Chevrolet454ss
