Hello, I found this coin among other coins in my grandfathers belongings after he passed. It's in amazing condition for something that should be so ridiculously old so I'm having a tough time believing it's the real thing. I also tried a fridge magnet against it & it attracted but when I put ice on it the ice quickly melted. Maybe it's silver plated? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not well versed in coins.

If it was attracted to the magnet at all, you can rule it as a fake.
I know nearly nothing about this series, but it just does not look right at all.

JoanMcWench, to CCF. With the magnet attracted to the coin is a dead give away for fake. Sorry.

If it stuck to a magnet, then it's fake for sure.

to CCF. According to me Red Book the star count isn't right on your coin. It says 9 stars left 7 right,10 stars left 6 right. That being said and that it stuck to a magnet says it all unless a pro chimes in and say differently. John1

That was a sad truth I already assumed but I was wondering what the range of value would be even if a fake? Does it depend on the level of silver? It definitely sounds like silver. Could it be 90/10?

Quote: Could it be 90/10? 90% Silver 10% Copper (or .8924 Ag / .1076 Cu) wouldn't be ferromagnetic. In fact, it could well be slightly diamagnetic

It is valueless. It should be marked copy or destroyed.

Well, I think it's better to find out exactly how much silver is in this thing & sell it at silver price. However, thanks for the help everyone!

I have a question based on this thread - how much silver can a coin (or fake coin) have and still be magnetic?

Depends on how strong the magnet your using is.
